On November 5th, 1963 during President John F Kennedy's final visit to Michigan he visited Laughlin's Jewelry Store and spoke with customer George Zimmerman about starting a business together in Florida that would eventually become American Glue Company….

Mount Clemens is a small community in the town of Mount Clemens, Michigan. It was originally named for General John Hindman, who had been nominated as the Democratic candidate for Governor of Michigan in 1848. He won the election but resigned to take a seat on the United States Senate. His term began on March 3, 1849 and ended on December 3,1851. The first settler in what is now Mount Clemens was Captain Nathaniel Houghton, who arrived from Connecticut in 1792. He built a cabin near where he lived until his death in 1814. The next year, Reverend Samuel Morse came to live at nearby Assumption Church and established a school there in 1796. In 1800, Captain Amos Kendall settled here with his family and started a gristmill that still operates today. In 1807, General Anthony Wayne appointed Major James Wilkinson as military commander of Detroit Territory after its acquisition by America from Great Britain during the War of 1812. Wilkinson served until his death in 1815 and left behind him an important role in the development of Mount Clemens: he purchased land around present-day MountClemens and laid out roads and houses there; he also built an academy for students living near Detroit University; and he donated land to build churches (including one which remains serving today). In 1830, when Cass County was created from part of Oakland County, much of what is now Mount Clemens became part of that county too. However, because it was located within Cass County's eastern border – including present-day Morris Township – most people continued to call their settlement "Mount Clemens." When Washtenaw County was formed from parts of both Ashtabula County (including Mtclemons) and Oakland County (including most of what is now Pontiac) on January 1st, 1840,[1] all land east of Battle Creek [now Inkster] were included within Washtenaw County's borders[2]. This included present-dayMountClemons[3], which consequently lost its status as an independent community within Washtenaw County.[4] When Macomb Township was organized into township form on November 1st., 1861,[5][6], it decided that "Mount CLEMENS" should be its name rather than "Washtenaw Township". Consequently, when Macomb Township changed its name to Groveland Township on July 15th., 1969,[7], "Mount CLEMENS" continues to be used informally throughout that township.[8] There are several interesting stories associated with Mount Clemens; some dates back over 100 years while others only date back a few months or years! One such story concerns local resident Wm Hallett who developed relations with George Armstrong Custer during the American Civil War: Custer fought under General Winfield Scott at Iuka Gap during October 1862.[9][10][11][12] Custer later married Hallett's daughter Clara Barton.[13] Another story involves local physician Milt Egan:[14]Egan performed surgery at Griggs Hospital across from US Military Barracks at Ft McNair during World War II,[15][16][17][18] earning him many patients' respect along the way! Finally - another interesting story about Mount CleMENs surrounds road construction taking place near town center between 1915- 1920:[19][/20][/21][/22][/23][/24],[25],[26],[27],[28],[29]] Many people may not know this but street names like Second Street North Avenue West just so happen to be located right outside town limits!
