Mount Clemens is a small community in the U.S. state of Michigan and it is located on the Ottawa River. The community was founded in 1814 by farmers who built a cabin near the site of present-day Mount Clemens. The town rapidly grew, becoming an important crossroads for travelers on the Ottawa River. In 1836, the town was incorporated as Mount Clemens Township. It enjoyed periodic growth until World War II, when its population plummeted due to wartime relocation and economic decline. Today, Mount Clemens remains a primarily rural community with a small population density. The first residents of what would become Mount Clemens were farmers who settled along the riverbank in 1814. By 1830, they had constructed a cabin and named their settlement after their home state of Ohio – MountClemens in honor of General George Washington's visit to that state two years earlier. The early settlers were happy with their new location and managed to maintain some level of prosperity despite poor soil and limited resources. However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), much violence occurred along the border between Canada and America; this led to increased traffic on the river which caused problems for local growers and merchants alike. This conflict also impacted music industry activity as musical equipment had to be brought overland from Canada; this made transport expensive and slow so that many bands didn't have enough time or money to tour locally during those difficult times (see "Migration within Mtclemens" for more information). In 1865, following Reconstruction Effort in America following Abraham Lincoln's election as President, Congress passed an act providing amnesty for all Confederate soldiers1800 miles east of Jackson County line in order to prevent any further bloodshed on American soil (this event is commonly known as "The Overland Railroad Robbery"). As part of this effort, $1 million was appropriated by Congress towards construction of what would become known as The Overland Railroad – one of America's earliest mass transportation projects (the other being Morse’s telegraph system). This project helped spur economic development throughout central Michigan while creating jobs for locals; it also allowed people living westward across country access to foodstuff they could not get back at home using land routes like waterways or dirt roads circuitous through Appalachia or Mexico City (see "Migration within Mtclemens" for more information). In 1896 referendum results showed that most residents wanted incorporation into Detroit; however because township status did not confer voting rights equal to city citizens then only 3 out of 11 trustees voted against incorporation into Detroit instead opting instead for management by trustees appointed by Mayor Harry Biddlecombe - making Mtclemons one of just six municipalities statewide without voting rights granted unto it under state law at that time (the others being Dearborn Heights, Highland Park Village/Oak Forest Village outside Detroit proper/Southfield Township)). In 1846, a group of farmers and businessmen traveled to the area around Mount Clemens to purchase land for what would become the town of Mount Clemens. The town was chartered on November 2, 1847. The first post office in the town was established on December 1, 1847. The town grew rapidly due to its location and access to natural resources such as coal, lumber, and oil. In 1870, the population of Mount Clemens was over 1000 people. By 1900, the population had grown to over 3000 people. Mount Clemens became a manufacturing center during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many companies that manufactured goods in Mount Clemens include Armoury Company (1895-1901), Dodge Brothers Manufacturing Company (1896-1900), John Deere Manufacturing Company (1897-1902), General Electric Corporation (1904-1908), American Telephone & Telegraph Company (1900-1920), National Broadcasting Corporation (1920-1974) and others. During World War II, MountClemens played an important role in providing munitions production for the US military effort in Europe. The plant produced artillery shells and other weaponry used in war including tanks, planes and warships.
