In 1898, James Worthy published a map of Michigan with its boundaries which included what is now the Mount Clemens area within its bounds. In 1907, Clarence King published an article about Morrissey Township which lies along US-27 and included a description of what is now Morrissey Township within its boundaries. Mount Clemens is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the eastern border of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and is the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 12,514 at the 2010 census. The name "Clemens" comes from German immigrants who settled here in 1837. In 1837, a group of Germans founded what would become Mount Clemens as they traveled through what is now Oakland County on their way to find land that they could own and settle. When they arrived, they found a valley with mountains in it and named it after themselves – Clemens Valley (meaning "valley"). The town started off as a small village with only about 30 residents in 1839. It grew quickly because people wanted to get away from Detroit and its bad air quality. In 1850, when Mt Clemens became an incorporated city, it had around 700 residents. By 1860, it had grown to over 1,000 people and by 1870 it had reached 2,500 people! The city's growth was due to its location – right next to Wolverine Lake which made for good fishing grounds and also served as a transportation artery because there were no roads back then! The water was also essential for making bread since most homes didn't have plumbing back then! Mount Clemens also became known for its cigars which were exportable at that time! The first white settlers in what is now Mount Clemens were Indian traders, who came to the area in 1837. In 1847, the United States government purchased land from the Indians and developed it into a township. The first post office was established in Mount Clemens on May 5, 1846. The town became a city on November 1, 1975.
