The name "Clemens" comes from two settlers: John Clemens and his brother-in-law George Washington. They were moving west from Rochester when they came across a land deed naming a mountain after John's father-in-law, Nicholas Ball. The brothers named their new settlement Mount Clemens after Nicholas Ball. The first settler in Mount Clemens was Michael Fenton who arrived in 1836. He built a cabin on what is now First Street between Second and Third Streets. In 1840, LEMBY & CO., groceries and wagon business owners erected a store on Fourth Street between Main and Fifth Streets which became known as "Mount Clemens Store." By 1851, there were nine stores in Mount Clemens with an estimated population of 350 residents. In 1857, Aiken & Co., druggists started operations on Main Street between Third and Fourth Streets; this became known as "Aiken's Drug Store." In 1861, WILLIAM HUGHES opened his own grocery store on North First Street between Main and Second Streets which became known as "Hughes' Grocery". In 1865 JAMES BIRD opened his bakery at Ninth Avenue and East Seventh Street which became known as "Bird's Bakery." In 1871 JOHN FERGUSON started operating a flour mill at Third Avenue and East SixthStreet which becameknown as"Ferguson's Flour Mill". In 1903 ROBERT KNOX erected a frame building on West First Street betweenMainandSecond streets which served as the first post office for Mount Clemonsnest before that time service was provided by WILLIAM DICKINSON located off South Euclid Avenue north ofFirst street until 1888 when he moved to (now) downtown Detroit . On November 12th 1906 WILfreda MARTINEZ married John Pappas who had been born in Mtclemonsnest February 5th 1897 .Pappas had come to live with Martinez family when he enlisted with US Army World War I unit number 344479 duringMustang Rebellion October 1914 ..... From 1918 until her death she resided at 715 E Jefferson St Mtclemonsnest Mich ..... Mrs Martinez died October 4th 2001

Mount Clemens is a small community in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The community was named for General James Fenton, who fought in the War of 1812 and served as a Brigadier General in the Michigan Militia. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. The first residents of Mount Clemens were those who came to live on the land that now makes up the community in 1824. The town was founded by John Grosse and his family, who bought 640 acres (250 hectares) of land from Nicholas Waterman. In 1827, Andrew Donelson purchased 160 acres (60 hectares) of land from Grosse and made Mount Clemens his home. The town began to grow rapidly after it became known as a military post during the War of 1812. It attracted soldiers and their families with its good location, access to water supplies, and easy transportation to other parts of Michigan. In 1829, George Stephenson donated 2 miles (3 kilometers) of road from Gratiot County to Mount Clemens so that people could get to their businesses more easily. By 1840, there were over 100 businesses in Mount Clemens; most were farmers or merchants who supplied goods to local consumers or sold products door-to-door. Mount Clemens grew even faster during the years following World War II when demand for military personnel increased throughout America due to both World War I and World War II. This growth led to many new homes being built in Mount Clemens – many are still standing today thanks to its strong economy which has kept the community thriving over time
Mount Clemens is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the Grand River southeast of Lansing and east of Detroit. As of the 2010 census, the population was 44,711. The name "Clemens" likely comes from a French word meaning "rocky mouth." The first European settlement in what is now Mount Clemens was by French fur traders in 1795. They named their new community after Jean-Baptiste LeClaire, who had explored and charted the region for them. In 1814, settlers founded a Methodist church at what is now Center Street and Second Avenue. In 1824, an act was passed to create a township within Washtenaw County for people from eastern Michigan Territory who had settled along the Grand River between Ottawa and Saginaw Counties. A committee appointed to choose a site for this township chose Mount Clemens as its primary village because it offered good possibilities for trade with other parts of Michigan and because it appeared to be well situated for military purposes on account of its natural advantages as a pass through the mountains to Lake Huron. The town began construction on what is now First Avenue and Third Street in 1825 but stopped when funding became available not long after its founding. The post office at Mount Clemens was established in 1830; it moved to its present location near Main Street and Highway 9 in 1865 . In 1839, American heavy artillery inventor Lewis Noyes set up shop here during his experiments with Gunslingers rifles before starting his own firearms company which went public that year . One settler described Noyes' store as being "a commodious structure almost filling one side of First street." This store continued operation until 1918 when it burned down due to firebombing by Japan while Allied forces were occupying Japan; however, much later it was rebuilt using Japanese architecture (along with some original United States furnishings) and reopened as part of University Village Historic District located adjacent to Central Michigan University across First Avenue from today's Noyes Building). After World War II ended hostilities in 1945, Mount Clemens developed into one of the most heavily industrial cities in America with factories manufacturing everything from radios to tires
