Mount Clemens is a small town in the Kalamazoo area of Michigan. The population was 5,906 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern border of Eastern Michigan and is bordered by Ottawa County to the north, Muskegon County to the east, and Grand Traverse County to the south. The name "Clemens" comes from one of its first settlers, George Clemens. Mount Clemens was founded in 1837 by Abram Tilton and others as a place for Methodist missionaries to preach. In 1853 it became a village with a post office and two churches. A sawmill was built there in 1865 and continued in operation until it went out of business in 1922. The first school building was erected here in 1885; it burned down in 1906 but was rebuilt under new management and reopened as an elementary school in 1916. The Village of Mount Clemens lost its charter with City of Lansing in 1965 due to protests from residents who felt their taxes were being misused by Lansing. However, it regained city status when Lansing merged with Grand Rapids on January 1, 1997. The current mayor is Jeff Skocpol. The village has six schools: Mount Clemens Elementary School (grades K-5), Eastwood Elementary School (grades 6-8), Westinghouse Middle School (grades 9-12), Clearwater Intermediate School (grades 13-16), and United Methodist High School (grades 17-19). There are also two businesses: First National Bank & Trust Company which opened up shop here in 1925 and Mrs.'s Pizza which opened up shop here about 1985 although it closed down around 2002 according to company records There are several heritage organizations located within or surrounding Mount Clemens including Eastern Michigan University's Institute for Maritime Studies which houses both an exhibit on early American shippingography and research vessels used during World War II;[6] the Stroud Museum of American History,[7][8][9][10] local historical societies like Carpentersville Historical Society #2,[11][12][13], Mount Pleasant Township Historical Society (#1), Muskegon Heights Historical Society (#2) XIVth Infantry Regiment Association#1,[14], Highland Park Cemetery Sons & Daughters #1,[15][16],[17] Saginaw Valley Railroad Museum#2,[18] Mt.[19][/20]. Mount Clemens is a small community located in Macomb County, Michigan, United States. The community was founded in 1848 and named for General George Washington Mount, who served as the first U.S. Minister to Russia. The population of Mount Clemens peaked at 255 in 1910 and has since declined to about 60 people today. The history of Mount Clemens begins with the arrival of European settlers in 1848. Three men - John Sibley, Nicholas Metzger and Elijah Woods - set out from Detroit on horseback to found a trading post on the mouth of Muskegon River near what is now Mount Clemens. The post was successful and they continued to expand their business into other areas around the area until it was discontinued by 1857 because of lack of customers and resources. In 1872, Captain John Grosse took over control of the trading post and renamed it Grosse Pointe Trading Post after his brother-in-law, George Prentice Jr., who had also founded Grosse Pointe Lighthouse in 1870. In 1875–76, Captain Grosse built a house at what is now the center of town on land that he donated to the town under an agreement made with then-President James Ketchum. At first, only white people were allowed to live there; however, by 1886 black residents had started living there too following Reconstruction in America which ended slavery throughout much southern America including Michigan Territory except for Detroit proper where continued African American labor helped support white cotton farmers during this time period. By 1907 only white people were allowed to live there again due to growing social tensions within racially divided America – although black residents still lived openly within town limits until 1966 when all racial restrictions were lifted effective midnight.) Grosse Pointe Trading Post closed its doors for good circa 1906 but reopening occurred soon afterwards as Dearborn Heights Trading Post (now known as Midtown) which became one of Macomb County's most popular tourist destinations boasting excellent shopping opportunities along with lodging options such as fine restaurants overlooking downtown while offering access easily from both sides of I-94 outside city limits making it an easy day trip or weekend getaway spot for locals/outsiders alike during those days before cell phone service became available statewide starting in 1958). During World War II many military personnel stationed at Grosse Pointe either cooked or ate here while garrisoning nearby facilities like Ford Motors Plant #5 etc…. It reopened briefly again following cessation hostilities but shuttered permanently AGAIN following Korean War when all local businesses became closed off suspicion that some sorta “politically sensitive” photos taken inside plant may have been mishandled resulting indirectly & finally via National Guard troops occupying property leading eventually to demolition efforts beginning circa 1953 accompaning opening & subsequent traffic congestion caused by increased production values associated with newly constructed GM plants adjacent thereto…) During this time period Mt Clemens experienced rapid growth becoming one of southeast Michigan's most thriving communities characterized by high quality housing developments such as Winnetka Park Estates developed specifically for military personnel & their families followed shortly thereafter by smaller family homes called Good Hope Farms developments catering primarily towards lower income residentry characterized thereby being more affordable than larger more conformist suburban neighborhoods elsewhere typically seen increasing prices associated with discretionary luxury items becoming increasingly rarer along side corresponding decreases overall quality levels generally attributed derisively (& irresponsibly) variously (& collectively) labeled "detroitization" ??? Many contributing factors included government indifference bordering on neglect typical among large metropolitan areas experiencing similar growth rates prior Wheeling Wabash Steel Corp merger resultant increased competition especially amongst educationally oriented businesses particularly
