The history of ammunition in Mount Clemens, Michigan dates back to 1857 when the first shot was fired at a local cannon during the Mexican-American War. The area became known as “the Arsenal of the West” because of its numerous cannons that were used in that conflict. Ammunition production continued until 1861, when the Union army took over Mount Clemens and destroyed most of the cannons. From then on, ammunition production ceased for reasons unknown. However, evidence suggests that ammunition production resumed in 1865 after Union troops left Mount Clemens. Ammunition manufacturing recommenced in Mount Clemens until 1899, when it closed down due to declining demand for munitions. In terms of calibers and types of projectiles used with cannons in Mount Clemens, there are a variety of projectiles available including small arms rounds such as buckshot and ball ammo; large caliber artillery pieces like mortar shells and artillery rockets; and even limited numbers of armor piercing rounds. In addition to firearms, other mountaintop locations where cannonballs have been fired include Fort Snelling (Minnesota) and White Sands (New Mexico).

Clemens has been mentioned several times on The Simpsons; one episode featured Homer driving down its street after getting lost trying to find his way back home from a family gathering at Thanksgiving dinner; another featured Marge taking her son to school (now called Homer Elementary) on a day when temperatures had reached 100 degrees Fahrenheit outside; and another featured Lisa's attempt to win affections from Mr. Burns by singing "I Wanna Be A Star" at his birthday party for him while wearing a Mt.Clemons t-shirt (a parody of Simpson's famous "You Bet Your Life"). In one episode shown after 9/11/2001, Mt. Clemens was also used as a location for Springfield's flying saucer crash scene seen throughout much of that show's run

Mount Clemens is a small town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn (DWD) Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Mount Clemens were French fur traders on their way to the Upper Peninsula in 1814. The town was founded in 1834 by Captain John Nevin as a clearing and agricultural community on the east side of Grand River near its confluence with Lake Michigan. In 1840, Mount Clemens became home to what is now Detroit's Second University; it had been established as a Black Collegiate Institute (BCI) in 1837 by Detroit merchant Nathan Stiles. In 1849, Mount Clemens became an incorporated village when all of Muskegon County was organized into one government entity. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Mount Clemens sided with the Union and aided in its Battle of Gratiot which helped set back Confederate troops for several months. After the war ended, many Reconstruction-era African Americans moved into Mount Clemens and other rural areas of Muskegon County as free labor for local businesses and agriculture. They raised crops and livestock until about 1920 when they were finally granted full civil rights by acts of Congress following World War II.
