Monroe, Michigan is a small town in the heart of Upper Peninsula country. It was first settled by English colonists in 1795, and became a census-designated place (CDP) in 1958. The population of Monroe was 7,855 at the 2010 census. The town is located on the banks of the Liancourt River, just east of its confluence with the Muskegon River. The land that now makes up Monroe was first purchased from Chief Joseph of the Anishinaabe people by Major Nicholas Morin in 1795. The name "Monroe" is derived from this purchase. Prior to becoming part of Michigan, Monroe served as a district seat for Arenac County, Illinois; it was moved to its present location in 1836 when that county was merged into Macomb County. The first settler in what would become Monroe was John Barber who arrived on July 10, 1795. He and his family were among about 50 people who journeyed overland from Pennsylvania to start a new life near Cadillac on Lake Huron. They named their new settlement after George Washington but later changed it to Monroe because they did not want any other Indian village nearby with similar namesakes. In 1836, followingMacomb County's incorporation as a separate state, Arenac County also became part of Michigan and took on the name "Monroe." As part of this change, all titles throughout Arenac and Macomb counties were redesignated as CDPs - including Monroe - due to its importance as an agricultural community within those two counties alone. With few exceptions during World War II (the war resulting in significant destruction throughout most of America), no changes occurred to Monroe's character or demographics until well into the 21st century; however several notable events have taken place here during this time: dances honoring veterans are held every year at Veterans Memorial Park; a children’s museum called "Tiny Tots" opened its doors in 2009; and United States Route 56 has been renamed “Mississippi State Highway 56” after referendum results showed overwhelming support for changing it from its current designation which honored both Confederate General Robert E Lee and Ulysses S Grant
