Monroe, Michigan is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the east side of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and adjacent to Ottawa County on the west side. The population was 2,992 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek-Holland Metropolitan Statistical Area. Monroe was founded by John Montero in 1824 as a post office called "NewTON". In 1835, it was renamed "Monroe" after James Monroe, then president of the United States. In 1867, Monroe became part of Battle Creek Township and in 1889 it became a separate city when Battle Creek Township was reorganized into a county. The city annexed portions of Ottawa County in 1912 and 1933. It has since been entirely within Ottawa County. The first settler in what is now Monroe was Isaac Sanger who arrived about 1800 from New York City with his family. He built a cabin on what is now State Route 83 between 1800 and 1802 and named it "Sanger's Fort". He also began trading goods with local natives hereabouts and sold goods along what is now Muskegon Avenue nearpresent day Monroe Park Elementary School which he built himself during this time period In 1805, Jacob Montero immigrated from Spain to become one of the first white men to settle in what is now Monroe Township area after traveling downriver from Detroit via Green Bay settlement route (today's I-55). Jacob had two sons: Ishmael (born 1792) and Nicholas (born 1796). They erected stores near present day Mount Pleasant Lutheran Church which still stands today as evidence that these early settlers were influential residents hereabouts for some time before moving on or else starting their own families back home back then too! Jacob Montero also started driving an oxcart service upriver from Detroit to sell goods at various points along its travels making this an important economic activity at that time for village farmers all over this region! Anyway back to our story...In about 1830 Isaac Sanger married Rachel Nichols widow of Captain John Nichols who settled here around 1840s & they had 3 children: Nicholas Sanger (1830-1899), Mary Ann Sanger (1832-1911), & George Wm Sanger(1834-) . Rachel Nichols later remarried Abram Kapp but they never had any kids so she may have died young? Anyway back to our story...It should be noted that according to some researchers who did historical research on this topic there are actually 4 different sources listing 3 different sets of parents for Nicholas Sangers birth certificate suggesting either he may have been born illegitimate or his parents may have changed their names multiple times while living/working hereabouts causing confusion among historians LOL! Anyway we'll move onto something more pressing right now btw LOL
Monroe was founded by the Potawatomi Indians in 1812. The town was named after General James Monroe, who served as President of the United States from 1829 to 1837. In 1908, Monroe became a city and is now a part of Detroit.
