Monroe is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan on the Grand River. The population was 7,545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area and was included in the Detroit metropolitan area until it was merged into Detroit in 2017. Monroe is named for James Monroe, 5th president of the United States and brother-in-law to George Washington. The first settler in what would become Monroe County was Nicholas Morrell, who arrived in 1795 from Virginia with his family. The county was organized on February 14, 1800 by William Hull as part of what would become Kent County, Michigan Territory. On July 1, 1809, it became a part of Washtenaw County when that territory was created from parts of Upper Peninsula counties including Wayne and Oakland Counties (now Waterford Township). The town of Monroe began development as a trading post near its current location on the Grand River on December 12, 1824 by David Ludington and John Schermerhorn under charter from Henry Ford; it became an incorporated village four years later on January 20th, 1830. A ferry landed at present day Monroeville Landing on Mud Lake until 1813 when construction began on a more permanent crossing over Mud Lake which opened October 15th1817 by Wm Fenton & Company., Later this ferry served as an important transportation link between Point Pelee National Monument eastward via Holland Marsh and westward via Muskegon Rapids across Lapeer Sound to Superior City before being replaced by ferries operated by Lakeshore Navigation Company after 1922 when that company's assets were acquired by Toledo Boat Works Incorporated In 1925 following purchase of Lakeshore Navigation Company's assets by JN&L Canalshares Corporation; today's MOVE Ferry Terminal serve as both terminal facilities for passenger boat operations operated by JN&L Canalshares Corporation (MOVE) while also providing access to points within Monroe Municipal limits.. In recent years many businesses have moved out or been closed due to competition from online shopping malls such as Walmart Supercenter and Sears Holdings Retail store located just outside city limits along I-94 Exit 244 off Interstate 95; these retailers have helped contribute to economic decline in downtown Monroe since 2000.. Downtown Monroe has seen an increase in popularity among retirees seeking lifestyles close to nature but without all of the noise found elsewhere within city boundaries; several organic farms offer products available only at their stores along I-94 exit 244 adjacent to Independence Mall which offers restaraunts and other services.. A new business park called "Town Square" located around I-94 Exit 248 off Main Street contains numerous small businesses including several gift shops,,,, juke joints,, bars,, fast food restaurants etc.; this development may help stimulate resident growth back into downtown if successful enough..

In 1814, he founded the town of Pottersville on an orchard and meadow donated by his brother-in-law, General David Wilkinson.Potterville grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the Rouge River between Detroit and Milwaukee Junction (now Walled City). After pottering's death in 1820, his two sons took over his business operations until their father's death in 1830. George Mize opened a hotel in Pottersville in 1834; it became one of the most successful hotels in the region. In 1861, when Washtenaw Territory was created from parts of Michigan and Ontario County (of which Monroe was then a part), it included much of what is now Monroe County as well as portions of Huron and Lapeer Counties to the north and east respectively.
