Monroe, Michigan is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and is part of the Huron County. The population was 5,569 as of the 2010 census. The area that makes up Monroe has been inhabited by Native Americans for over a thousand years. It was first settled by French colonists in 1701. In 1836, the United States acquired control of what are now Michigan and Ohio counties from Great Britain. This gave rise to Monroe as an American city, which began to grow rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s under its new name of Detroit. However, due to its strategic location on a key route connecting eastern Canada with Central America, Monroe quickly become one of the largest ports on East Lake Erie and became known as "the Gateway to the Midwest." The rifle stock industry in Monroe began to take form in earnest during World War I when federal government funding was available for military firearm purchases through what were then called "truckshipping" programs. These programs allowed purchase of rifles and shotguns across state lines without having to go through traditional channels such as dealers or mail order houses. As this program grew more popular over time, so too did rifle stocks sales in Monroe. This increase can be partially attributed to877 Arms Inc., which became one of the most prominent ammunition distributors in town after opening its doors in 1919. adjacent Superior Armoury also saw a significant growth following their establishment in 1924 as well. By 1930, rifle stocks had become an established part of local community life with businesses like Superior Armoury being big enough to support both store operations and associated firearms shows/events annually (eagle gun show being one notable event). However, World War II would see some major changes for Monroe Municipality with many residents enlisted into service along with their firearms becoming necessary tools for war effort (rear-guard duty being one such example). Unfortunately for locals caught between German forces occupying their homes during wartime while supplies were scarce or simply not available post-war (elderly men still requiredto serve garrison duties), much Rifle Stock history transpired hereabouts that cannot be fully documented herein given greater scarcity thereof throughout much portions central Michigan at large following 1945 hostilities however ample documentation exists elsewhere chronicling wartime influence on local economy etcetera etcetera...In any case postwar conditions returned locally manufacturing formerly subsistence based businesses back onto regular levels albeit employment rates remained below pre-war levels thru 1946 before slowly increasing again thru 1949 once all guns had come homealbeit employment rates remain quite low today w/o [rifle] stocks! In 1847, Monroe became the seat of Washtenaw County after it was created from parts of Wayne and Shiawassee counties. The county courthouse was built in 1898 and remains standing today. In 1954, Monroe became a city when it merged with nearby Warren to form the Lansing metropolitan area. 2 years later, it joined the Detroit metropolitan area through amalgamation with other nearby cities. In 2002, Monroe lost its charter as a city and became an unincorporated community again under state law control. However, it has continued to maintain certain municipal services such as fire protection and police presence within its borders. The town's name comes from John Monroe who first settled there in 1835 with his family before moving upriver to what is now Muskegon Heights south of Grand Rapids and north of Detroit
