Monroe is part of the Muskegon Heights Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become Monroe was Nicholas de Moncton, who arrived in 1799. He named his land Monroe after George Washington, though it never became part of the United States due to a dispute over fishing rights. A post office called Monroe was established in 1801, and remained in operation until 1959. A mill opened on the banks of the Shiawassee River in 1830, and by 1832 had produced cotton napkins and other products for local consumption and export. The mill closed in 1836 but reopened as an agricultural flourmill in 1840. In 1865–1868, Henry Ford built a small dairy farm here that he operated until his death in 1947; it now forms part of American Farm Bureau Museum's collection (accessed online). In 1872–1873, James Fenton constructed a frame schoolhouse opposite where he currently resides (now known as Griggs School House). It served as classrooms for students from kindergarten through 12th grade during this time period; however, it was not demolished until 1986 when new construction began on nearby Griggs Middle School which replaced it-1948- . The school district purchased it from Fenton's heirs for $2 million dollars on March 25th 1998 During World War II many workers lived and worked at Ford Motor Company's Rouge plant located adjacent to Griggs School House; some even went so far as to call themselves "Griggs Boys". Also during World War II much economic activity took place along US Route 11 near present day Haggerty Road east of Monroe; many businesses were open including: Post Office (Monroe), United creamery (now defunct), Auto Parts store #1 (closed since 1990) among others After World War II there continued growth with more people coming into town such as farmers who started growing crops like corn and soybeans sowthed together with help from government loans given out during that time period; also auto dealerships popped up all around town because there were few cars available when war ended so people bought them or leased them From 1948-1966 Griggs High School was also built next door to this one across Haggerty Rd just south of current day Ihle Drive
