The first Europeans to arrive in Monroe were Étienne Prieur and his family who settled on an island near what is now downtown Monroe in 1836. They built a log cabin that still stands today. The first town meeting was held on July 10, 1837, and they voted to name the new town after James K. Polk which they found on a map of America that had been given to them by General Lewis Cass as a gift from President Jackson. Monroe quickly developed into a thriving community with many businesses and residents. The first school was built in 1840 and it taught school until 1865 when it became the county courthouse. In 1847, local farmers began growing maize (corn) for export to Russia which caused demand for food to increase within the community so an agricultural fairs were held every year from then on until 1958 when corn became prohibited as a food product in most U.S., including Canada, due to nutritional concerns about genetically modified corn products.. In 1907, Alonzo Snyders established Snyders' Glass Works which continues production today making several types of glassware including china, dinner plates and milk pails among others.. In 1911 Clarence Bowers opened Bowers Drug Store which remains open today as one of Kalamazoo's longest running businesses with over 60 years of history! It wasn't until 1933 that electric lights were brought to Monroe through Detroit Edison Company wires extending out into our town square where citizens could see their city lights from their homes! This event marked not only an important milestone for Monroe but also symbolized starting point for growth throughout all ofKalamazoo County! The 1940s saw heavy industry come to life with production coming at such venues as Ford Motor Company ( Rouge Plant), International Harvester (Traverse City plant), Dodge & Chrysler Corporation (Midden plant) among others! But even during these tough times there were some brave souls who refused adversity; such examples include Don Whitehead who started White's Grocery store back in 1939 despite being laughed at by other business owners because he didn't have any inventory! However even though things can be tough sometimes there are moments when people just light up when they hear about something good happening; like when news filtered down about how much money had been raised for restoration efforts related toJB Mcdonalds restaurant fire!!
