Monroe was incorporated as a town on November 3, 1837, by five Republicans who were dissatisfied with the location of Detroit. The town had been founded on the site of what is now Monroe Township. The first post office in town was established in 1840. The township was organized on December 12, 1847. It was named for James Monroe, the ninth president of the United States and an opponent of slavery. In 1862, General Philip Sheridan's army invaded Michigan Territory and burned down several small towns in the territory before crossing into Ohio near Detroit. President Abraham Lincoln ordered General Douglas to march his troops into Wayne County to destroy any slave camps there before they could be used as military targets. This operation became known as the Battle of Gettysburg and marked one of history's largest cavalry engagements. After the Civil War, Monroe lost some its population due to migration to other states and reunion with Michigan Territory which included crucible cities like Cleveland and Toledo during Reconstruction period (1868-1875). In 1898, when it merged with neighboring Clinton Township it had a population of only 154 people. However, within a few years that number had increased to 1,812 residents and continues growing today at over 4500 residents according to 2010 census data.
