Monroe is a small town in the Michigan Territory, located in Monroe County. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. The ZIP code is 48835. The first settler of Monroe was John Ferguson on September 26, 1814. He and his wife Betsy built a cabin on what is now known as FM 6051 east of town. In 1827, James Fenton founded the village of Fraserburgh on land that he had purchased from the Naknaquah Indian Tribe. In 1829, he named it Monroe after George Washington Monroe who had served as governor of Virginia from 1785 to 1793 and as US Secretary of State from 1797 to 1800. On October 1, 1830, the Village of Fraserburgh merged with Monroe to form a new village called "Monroe". On January 1, 1834, it became an incorporated township under the name "Monroe Township". On November 3, 1840, it became a part of Clinton Township when that township was created from parts of several other townships including Fulton and Uniontown. The Macomb Land Company organized in 1862 and bought some thousand acres (about 2 km²) around present-day Monroe for $1 per acre (2/km²). They started farming using oxen and tractors which they drove over dirt roads into high country where they found large amounts of coal and lumber. The company grew quickly until 1870 when it went bankrupt due to competition by other mills in nearby Detroit; however its legacy lives on through donations to many colleges and universities across North America

Monroe is a small town in the Kalamazoo-Portage County area of Michigan. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Monroe is located on the Flint River, about 20 miles north of Lansing and 30 miles south of Battle Creek. It was founded by Andrew Crawford in 1814 as Monaville Township. The first settlers were white men, who built homes around what is now Monroe Middle School and Adams High School. A post office was established in 1824, and it remained in operation until 1959. The first store in Monroe opened in 1827 on State Street between Albany Avenue and Detroit Avenue. In 1830, John Ransom erected a log cabin on what is now Park Boulevard near where he operated a furrier business from 1831 to 1840. In 1840, Augustus Woodward purchased land east of present-day Monroe for $200 from Andrew Crawford's brother David Crawford. He began to farm the land which he named after his father: Algiers Township (now Muskegon Heights). As more farmers moved into the area and started raising crops such as corn, beans, wheat and potatoes, they needed water rights to drink from the Flint River; this led to a legal battle that lasted many years. In 1843–44, General James Koster fought an unsuccessful campaign against Tecumseh Hull while stationed at nearby Mosinee Barracks; as a result of this effort, Monroe became part of Koster's army headquarters during the war era. In 1861 when America entered into war with Confederate States of America during the American Civil War (1861–1865), Monroe residents took up arms against their northern neighbor; some even joined Union General George Armstrong Custer's column during his ill-fated march through Michigan Territory towards Chicago late that year. From 1865 until 1870 when it became part of Grand Rapids County under new state government structure following the end of Reconstruction Era], various businesses operated within or outside of Monroe including blacksmithing businesses which helped contribute to its early growth rate; also located here were two printing presses used by newspapers published in Lansing at that time: "The Freeman" (founded 1863) and "The Republican". On July 10th 1870 referendum question asking if township should be attached to county was placed on ballot by order of Governor Wm Halleck with over 60% support becoming clear among voters as no other questions received majority votes throughout all 88 member precincts across county wide vote count inclusive; accordingly petition drive initiated immediately upon notification results arrived & citizens quickly convened street meetings cribbing legislative proposals emanating form popular reaction (& frustration felt over lack thereof since past 4 yrrs nothing tangible accomplished despite numerous committee meetings & letters sent)...readiness unabashedly perceived & eagerness palpable given history...spurred rapid development due largely to sense Of Opportunity...& emerging political power dynamics resulting from expanding rural/ urban boundaries...thus easy accessibility 2nd home Rule Act resulted effective August 3rd 1880 establishing charter city status for newly formed city Limits okaying 50 sq mi annexation adjacent unincorporated areas east/west limits existing prior thereto within City Limits thru special act election November 8th 1880 giving Citizens control over future development decisions withinCity Limits thru amendment charter ratified November 11th 1980 providing for extraterritorial jurisdiction over issues pertaining thereto...
