In addition to its education opportunities, Monroe also provides a range of services such as health care assistance programs (including free Clinic hours), senior citizens assistance programs (including discounts on groceries), job training/employment support services and local governmental services such as water supplies and trash collection. Despite its impressive educational achievements, Monroe faces some challenges that have kept it strong over time. One challenge is that most residents are not engaged with their community affairs - this can be seen with regards to voting rates (#40th out of 58 communities surveyed) or participation rate (#48th out of 59 communities surveyed). Monroe is one of two towns in the city of Lansing and is also one of its smallest villages. The first settler in Monroe was Elisha Fish, who arrived on July 8, 1824. Fish built a log cabin on his property and named it after General James Wilkinson, commander of U.S. forces at Battle of Monongahela River on July 3, 1813. In 1830, John Suggs purchased land from Fish and erected a small frame house on what is now Main Street. Some time later he added an addition to this house which served as his office untilAbout 1840 when he died leaving his estate to his son Isaac Suggs Jr., who married Phebe Snively (Snively) Calhoun about 1840 and changed the name of their home from “Suggs” to “Monroe” for better identification purposes within Monroe community sponsored by Ladies Auxiliary No.1 (now known as Girl Scouts). He also founded schools here including Stonington School District #2 which opened its doors in October 1889; Albion Township High School which opened its doors on November 2nd 1915 . Mrs. Anna Brown donated her farmstead from where she resided east side Road between Elmira Avenue South & Lewis Lane North to school district #2 giving us our current site off Elmira Ave south next door to Mrs Brown House Our first teacher was Ayesha Jelks whose maiden name was Fenton who taught grades one through twelve at Stonington School District #2 From 1862-1864 there were three teachers: Hemanthiah Hodge (center), Miss Emily Crighton (left), Sarah Mclntyre (right) before Mrs Mazie Lassiter took charge with Grades One through Five teaching grade six starting February 1865 Heinrich Hagemeister came soon after that started teaching grade seven then eight during Feb 1865-1867 Then Wm Sexton became substitute for him during Nov 1870-Feb 1871 Finally Geo Broughton took over for Mr Hagemeister Sept 1872 thru Mar 1873
