Monroe is a small town in the Midwestern United States. It is located in Monroe County, on the eastern edge of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. The town is named after James Monroe, who was the 25th President of the United States (1817-1825). The first permanent settler in what would become Monroe was Nicholas Biddle, who built a log cabin on his family's farm in 1798. A post office called Biddleville was established in 1807 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1829. In 1828, John Dickey settled near present-day Monroe and began to build a sawmill and gristmill. Dickey also erected a schoolhouse and store building there in 1828. In 1832, David Rice settled alongside Dickey and built a wagonroad from Canada to Detroit that became known as the "Rice Road." The first stores opened along this road within two years of its establishment. By 1840, rice had become an important commodity grown hereabouts due to its numerous large fields available for cultivation. In 1840, William Wurtzel arrived from Germany with his wife Elizabeth and their five children to start trading posts along what would become known as Wurtzel Road which ran through present day Monroeville Township north of Saginaw Creek east of Mount Pleasant Township south of Shiawassee River Settlement area now part of Hudson Heights Borough . William Wurtzel selected this location because it offered good prospects for farming based on rich loam soil found hereabouts with some limestone hills nearby that could be quarried for building stone walls etc . He started out by buying 10 acres (4 hectares)of land at $10 per acre (2 km²). This purchase set off one of history's most significant development events when construction began on his new post office/factories complex – later renamed as "Wurtzeltown" – which included: 1) Post Office; 2) Factory; 3) Grading Plant; 4) Saw Mill; 5) Storeroom/Housekeeping Building; 6) Lumber Yard; 7) Coal mine No 1 where coal was mined from white sandstone cliffs above stream below settlement renamed Saginaw Creek Settlement area now part of Hudson Heights Borough ; 8) Coal mine No 2 where coal was mined from black shale cliffs above stream below settlement renamed Shiawassee River Settlement area now part of Hudson Heights Borough 9) School House next door to Factory mentioned earlier which served grades K -12 until 1922 when it closed down because too many students were coming into town during summer days but no buildings could be rented so school operations stopped & these buildings are still standing today almost 100 years later!
