That same year saw construction begin on what would become First Presbyterian Church located at 9th Street and I-75 near where East Lake Drive now exits I-75 southbound just south of milepost 479/MI 56 exit 16A (now former MI 64). Work began on this large church only to be stopped due to lack funding at the time; however due to donations from residents and others through petitions and election results later that year First Presbyterian moved into its permanent home at 6th & Woodward Avenue which served as their headquarters until 1959 when they relocated to Southfield Center mall after having their original building destroyed by fire In 1850s an elevation known as "The Hill" came about where present day Gratiot Avenue meets Woodward Avenue east of Midtown Park across from Job Corps Training Center today's MKE Music Factory up until that point most land west of there lay agricultural while east side lies industrial areas such as Ford Manufacturing Company site now occupied by Kalamazoo Community College . Roads were built then connecting these various sites making life much easier for farmers not just for those living within easy reach but also for those traveling between these vicinity over open prairies used today by sport shooters hunting deer or turkey

The area now comprising Midland was first settled by tribes of the Potawatomi and Shawnee during the 17th century. In 1863, Midland became part of Michigan Territory when it was organized as a result of the American Civil War. In 1868, after Michigan's admission to the Union, Midland became one of its original towns within St. Clair County. The city's growth continued through World War II with an influx of soldiers and their families who built factories and homes in Midtown and other areas around downtown. As late as 1950, just over half of all workers in St Clair County were employed in manufacturing or service industries; today this number has decreased to less than 10%. The most significant development during recent decades has beenOffice Park midtown which replaced much older industrial buildings on State Street between Wabash Avenue and Cass Corridor Boulevard east of downtown Midtown with high-end office space near Interstate 495/Wabash Expressway while continuing to maintain many historic streetscape features such as streetcar lines running down them (the last streetcars ran on May 3, 2006). This development created more jobs than any other single event in downtown Midtown since its incorporation into town in 1918. Office Park also included two hotels: One operated by Marriott Corporation (now occupancy levels are similar to those before it)and another operated by Hyatt Regency Hotels & Resorts Incorporated (now called Renaissance Grand River City Hotel). Many smaller businesses were displaced by these larger hotels but recovered quickly due to increased competition from more established restaurants and retailers nearby which began moving into vacated office space vacated by Marriott Corporation following its sale to Hyatt Regency Hotels & Resorts Incorporated in 2007
