In 1849–50 General Howard bought 20 square miles (50 km2), including what became Midland from Smedley for $10 per square mile ($1 million in 2009 dollars). This acquisition made it possible to develop what would become one of America's largest cities by creating an area for industry that could be easily accessed by railroads. The arrival of trains allowed farmers to move their goods to new markets such as Cleveland and Chicago while also providing jobs for local residents who built roads, schools, churches and other infrastructure necessary for mass production along with raw materials needed to make products like cars and textiles coming out of American Midwest factories
