In 1795, John Lennon was born here after his parents moved from Liverpool, England to start a family in nearby Ann Arbor.[1] In 1824, George Stephenson built a steamboat terminal on an artificial bay that would later become downtown Midland across from his shipyards at present day Hearst Tower[2]. Stephenson's venture launched what would become one of America's most famous transportation projects: bringing settlers to what is now Midland from Ohio and other states during the 1830s and 1840s;ilerousing much of what is now Downtown Midland today;[3]the first train into town arrived here on November 8, 1856;the first train out went three days later on December 2nd,[4][5]and by 1870 all rail traffic had ceased due to high water levels along both banks of the river below Catoctin Bridge.[6][7][8] By 1881 there were over 1,000 residents living in downtown streetscape area – which included everything between State Street downriver to Third Street local government buildings located on University Avenue just northward beyond current day Woodward Avenue – while many others lived elsewhere within commuting distance by means including steamboats or horse cars until automobiles became common following World War I. In 1907 [9], businessman James Sibley donated land for what would eventually be called "Downtown" (); this area now includes much of Central Park North adjacent to Woodward Avenue; Sibley also funded construction $30 million worth of public works projects including streetlights (now known as Morrison Park), dams (now known as Crystal Lake), schools (now known as Central High School), hospitals (now Washtenaw Valley Hospital), retail development (Old Steel Mill Plaza), gas stations (! On February 25th, 1830en Claim No. 5 (now part of United States Highway 12) was filed with US Patent # 64840 by Nicholas Putnam for land extending from where Ionia Street meets Ottawa Road to Ottawa River near present day Saginaw Township line (map below). This patent became official when it was witnessed by George Stephenson at his office in New York City on April 1st 1830 It should be noted that this grant included much more than just land - The patent also stipulated that "the said Putnam or any person claiming under him shall have full power to build a house thereon" In 1835 legislation authorized construction of a Methodist church in what is now downtown Midland (Stroudsburg Methodist Church), but no such structure was ever built The city started to form around this time with early residents settling along Ottawa Road near Saginaw Township line On July 9th 1840 John Aiken purchased Lot No 711 within current-day Canfield Park from Joshua Chamberlain for $2,500 dollars Aiken named his new town after himself – "John Aiken's Village". streets were laid out soon thereafter: Main Street east to west; State Avenue north to south; Washington Avenue east to west; Indian Trail south to north (now Anthony Place); and finally Ontario Road between Washington Avenue and Anthony Place
The area now known as Midland, Michigan was first settled by the Indians in the late 17th century. In 1805, a group of American Fur traders founded the town of Midland on the banks of the Black River. The town grew quickly and soon became a popular stopping point for travelers on their way to Mackinac Island, Detroit, or other destinations. In 1827, Midland was incorporated as a township under the name of Muskegon Heights. In 1835, it became a village when it joined with neighboring townships to form the new City of Muskegon. Midland experienced significant growth during World War II because of its strategic location at one end of Michigan's fertile Upper Peninsula and its ample supplies of munitions and other materials needed for war production. The city also played an important role in post-war reconstruction efforts in central Michigan.
