Scope mounts were first brought to Midland, Michigan by George W. Stephenson in 1852. The city was founded on the banks of the Maumee River and early settlers needed a way to look out for hostile Indian tribes. A small sawmill on the river became a launching site for fishermen looking to catch fish using oars. To make it easier for people to see what they were catching, Stephenson built a tower that could be seen from miles away. In 1857, Stephenson donated land in Midland for a public square and he also donated two cannons to be used as artillery pieces during the American Civil War. The cannons still stand today and are used as part of Midland's civic landscape. The Midland, Michigan community of Mount Pleasant was founded in 1834 by Andrew J. Herschel and his wife Ann with the intention of erecting a summer home for themselves and their six children. The community quickly grew, and in 1853 the Herschel family moved to a more spacious site on the east side of town. Mount Pleasant continued to grow, becoming an incorporated town in 1865. In 1899, the population of Mount Pleasant exceeded 1,000 residents. By 1916, the population had reached 3,000; by 1938 it had reached 5,000. In 1959, Mount Pleasant was annexed into Midland Township.
Midland, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Wayne County. Midland was founded in 1837 by Horace Greeley and other pioneers as the new capital of Washtenaw County after the official opening of that county's courthouse with sessions on July 6, 1837. The population was 9,752 at the 2010 census. It is located on the west bank of the St Clair River and is bordered by Oakland County to its south, Washtenaw County to its north, and Grand Rapids Township to its east and west. The first settler in what would become Midland was John Potter who arrived from Vermont in 1836. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street in what is now Midland City. Other early settlers included Isaac Van Nostrand (1840-1843), Elijah Bigelow (1841-1845), George Steuart (baptized January 12, 1842), Levi Coffin (died 1865), Solomon Northrup (born October 20th 1840) and others who arrived during or soon after Michigan's admission into Confederation as a new nation on November 11, 1847. In 1840 John Potter married Rachel Dodge while she was living near Detroit with her father Abram Dodge; they settled down near present day Brushy Point Road and Old Hwy 127 northwest of Midland City proper – just outside of which lies Apple Valley subdivision developed by Harry Laughlin for his family in 1922/23 adjacent to Brushy Point Golf Course which his son Michael has also managed since 1983/84 Parked vehicles: There are no current restrictions placed upon parking within Midlanders city limits except for one small lot across from Parma Avenue that has been restricted since1966 when it became possible to parked only inside those boundaries

A new courthouse was erected in 1843 and named for General David Dixon. The town of Lansing began to thrive as an agricultural center due to its location on water resources and its access to transportation. It soon became a major manufacturing center as well with tannery production becoming dominant during this time period. In 1865, the Michigan Central Railroad was created and arrived in Lansing providing easy access to goods available throughout Great Lakes Region
