Midland, Michigan is a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. Midland is located on the east side of the Lower Peninsula and was founded by fur traders in 1797. The town was named for John Midland, a British surveyor who had surveyed the area in that year. Midland's economy has been based on agriculture and fishing until recent years, when it has become increasingly dependent on manufacturing. In 1916, Midland became the first municipality to be incorporated in Michigan. The history of Midland began with fur traders who came to this area during the early 1800s looking for land to farm and trade with Native Americans. By 1797, there were over 20 fur traders living in what is now Midland. In 1807, a group of Frenchmen arrived here and established Fort Michilimackinac as a trading post near present-day Battle Creek. The following year another group of Frenchmen set up shop here at Green Gables which still stands today. The first school in what is now Midland was built here around 1810-12 under the direction of Reverend Nathaniel Davenport (1765-1827). Davenport developed an educational system that emphasized Christianity among other things and taught school for girls until about 1830 when it switched to boys.[1] Fur trading continued throughout most of the 19th century but increased activity from America during World War II led to dramatic changes for Midlanders as jobs went overseas or were created elsewhere within Michigan due to war production necessities such as munitions plants. Additionally more than 10% percent local workforce produced Victory Arms Ammunition used by U .S forces engaged abroad including 50% conversion plant at Munising Arsenal making armor plate using aluminum alloys procured from France In 1951, change happened as house numbers started trending upward starting with #2 where George MacDonald moved into one of these homes which would later be known as Masonic Temple Park#1 & House #209 being vacated by Mrs Justice Mayhew & her husband Dr Richard Mayhew who also bought property adjacent called Masonic Temple Park#2 soon afterwards becoming Manor House Developers Incorporated followed by others like Mr Forrest Weisenthal purchasing properties starting out numbering 1 through 7 starting out at #8 then moving onto 21st Street continuing westward eventually reaching 30TH STREET where they would finaly purchase property adjoining Elmhurst Hospital beginning numbering 31 through 39 forming Manor Health Care LLP becoming midlands first professional Noticed Corporation incorporating however their current building still standing vacant since purchased by Manor Health Care LLP on October 16th 1996 having been standing unused since then
The area that is now Midland, Michigan was first settled by the Potawatomi Native Americans in the late 18th century. The first European to arrive in what is now Midland was French explorer Pierre-Jean Chouteau, who explored and mapped the area in 1795. By 1800, the area had been discovered by George Washington and his army as part of their military expedition against France. In 1812, Midland was organized as a township within Washtenaw County. The population of Midland grew rapidly during the early 19th century due to its location on the Great Lakes region and its access to water resources. By 1827, there were over 200 residents living in what is now Midland. In 1865, following the American Civil War, Midland became a town under Michigan law. It remained an important strategic center until after World War II when it declined as a result of various economic problems. In 1970,Midlands merged with neighbouring communities of Lapeer and Waterford to form a new city known today as Detroit.
