Midland is a small, rural town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 5,471 at the 2010 census. Midland is bordered by Hillsboro to the east, Lapeer County to the north, and Grand Rapids to the west. The first people who settled in what is now Midland were probably those from Norway who arrived during the 18th century. By 1835, there were about 100 Norwegian settlers living in what is now Midland. The land that became Midland was first surveyed by Captain George Prentice in 1797 and it was purchased from Potawatomi Indians by fur traders under the name of "Neenah" on July 24, 1798. The town's early development may have been due to its location; as one of only two towns on both sides of Lake Huron between Gratiot and Manistee counties, it soon became an important commercial center for southeastern Michigan. A post office was established at Midland on October 12, 1824 (though received its official name change until December 8 that year) and remained open until May 1, 1865 when it was renamed Lapeer County after Circuit Judge Augustus Cranch Lapeer. On January 1, 1870 following a recommendation from Gov. John Englebach (), Midlanders voted to secede from Lapeer County and form their own new county named after them: "Midland". At this time nearly all of what is now Lower Michigan had become part of Indiana Territory including much of present-day Ottawa County and parts of Muskegon Heights and Oakland Counties as well as many smaller villages such as Battle Creek Township (). The first courthouse in town was built on Main Street near where current day Third Street meets Main Street (now known as Haggerty Road). It burned down in 1872 but a new courthouse was built shortly afterwards on First Avenue near where today's Roosevelt Road meets US 131/Interstate 90 (now known as I-290). This courthouse still stands today withstood severalandals over the years including one which resulted in $1 million being stolen from it during an attack earlier this year! In 1904 Drury & Company began trading here with local farmers producing hay for horses and other items needed for market gardening around Big Rapids which then turned into a large market for agricultural products statewide called "Drury's Prairie Marketplace". In 1912 Drury moved operations across I-94 into downtown Lansing but continued selling groceries here until they closed their doors permanently in 1978! Downtown business finally revived with construction starting on August 10th 2009 of a brand new $30 million dollar shopping complex consisting Of 4 buildings totaling over 350 feet long filled with Over 400 shops including 40 restaurants along with three main streets leading out onto I-94 providing direct access to most everything within minutes' driving distance! Although originally designed primarily for automobiles dealership parking will also be available off I-94 adjacent to One Ford Place which houses Sears Holdings Corporation since they bought significant acreage nearby adjoining Interstate 94! Finally less than 2 miles away an even more gigantic project entitled "The Mall" has been planned featuring Over 1 thousand storesrooms totaling over 5 acres!!! This will be just another example illustrating how economic opportunities can drive physical development throughout communities across America!!!! MIDLAND – A COMMUNITY THAT CHANGES WITH THE TIMES
