It also led to increased trade between these communities because it made it possible for them to share resources like water power and railroad connections . On February 14, 1829, President Andrew Jacksonproclaimed County Road No 4 "the National Road" through Michigan Territory; this road later became part of US 1A When Territorial Governor Moses Sells moved his capital from Detroit to Lansing in 1837–38, he recommended that Midland become his new capital; but because Lansing had more than 2,000 residents and no congressional district within its borders (a situation similar to today), midlasterners voted against moving their capital southward until LANSING COUNCIL PASSED A LAW SAYING THAT MIDLAND WOULD BE THE NEW CAPITAL OF MICHIGAN TOWARD THE END OF THE 19th CENTURY AS ALL OTHER METROPOLITAN CITIES WERE TRANSFERRED TO LANSING . In 1840s there were efforts by Nathaniel Hawthorne et al.,among othersto return Midlanders to their old Capital City status—but these failed due to lack advertising or support from people within Midlands boundaries
