In 1837, the town of Midland was founded by James McCandless. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources, and in 1845, it became a village. In 1898, Midland became a city. In 1957, the city merged with the neighboring village of Sheldon to form Midland-Sheldon City. The merger resulted in the creation of a new municipality that is still extant today.
