The area that makes up Midland was once part of the Great Lakes region and was home to many Native American nations including the Huron, Potawatomi, Ojibwe, etc. The first European settlers arrived in 1796 and by 1815 it had become a small village with just over 100 residents. In 1907 Midland merged with neighboring Warren Township to form what is now Midland County. During World War II most of what is now Midland were heavily bombed as part of strategic bombing raids against Japanese targets in order to inflict heavy casualties on their forces while also weakening their economy which was still reeling from war-time damage. After 1945 much development took place thanks to federal dollars being available through Wartime Loans Authority (WLA) which helped spur new industrialization and rural exodus which created many new jobs throughout what would come to be known as "The City". Today's downtown core has seen significant redevelopment including several high-rise buildings completed since 2000 in addition to numerous smaller projects taking place within walking distance both day and night centrally as well as providing access into various businesses districts around town where restaurants, bars and other commerical establishments line one side or another along busy streetside thoroughfares like Third Avenue South or Fourth Street North while residential areas such as Saginaw Hills continue struggling somewhat despite efforts by developerspite efforts by some local officials who maintain subsidized housing developments near major commercial corridors like I-675).
