In addition to its retail stores and restaurants, Midland also features numerous cultural attractions such as the John F Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum, IMAX Cinema Midwest (opened in 2001), Grand Valley State University's Stritch School of Art & Design (opened in 2004), Wayne County Fairgrounds (opened in 1961), as well as many public parks including Ford Park (established in 1911), McNichols Park (established in 1907), Woodbury Lake Recreation Area (established in 1937), Ashtabula Lakeshore Park (established in 1912), Hubbard Lake Recreation Area (establishedin 1921)
The present-day Midland area was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. In 1834, a group of settlers, led by John D. Rockefeller, founded the town of Midland on the east bank of the Moselle River. The town grew rapidly and soon became one of Michigan's leading communities. By 1860, Midland had over 20 Irish cotton farmers and 30 Scots-Irish farmers living in its population. The town also boasted two churches, four schools, a Masonic Lodge, and a brewery. In 1871, Midland incorporated as a village and quickly became one of Michigan's most vibrant municipalities. Throughout its history, Midland has been home to many notable people including US Congressman James Giddings (1881-1957), industrialist Andrew Mellon (1874-1966), poet Maya Angelou (1925-2006), and businessman George Romney (1945-2009).
