This township would be coterminous with present-day Macomb County until it was merged into Metro Detroit sometime between 1915 and 1925[8][9][10]. In 1865, Congress created Oakland County out of parts of Wayne and Shiawassee counties[11]. On November 3rd 1870,[12] voters in Macomb Township approved incorporation as a city by popular vote under Charter No A-1-0[13], becoming one of only two cities in Michigan to do so at that time. By 1890 however both Macomb Township and Oakland had been renamed for various reasons such as changing political boundaries or new growth within their respective counties:Macomb becameOakLANDCounty; Wayne becameWayneCounty; Shiawassee becameShiawasseeCounty; and portions thereof became Kentuckiana Counties through mergers with other counties during that period:[14][15][16]. Today most residents still refer to themselves as citizens or locals living within their home town/city limits regardless if they reside inside or outside those boundaries - much like how people commonly refer to each other today even though we may live hundreds or even thousands miles away from our hometowns/cities! John Davenport arrived in mid-1846 with his family from Iowa Territory viaboat and founded Davenport Place on what is now Main Street east of M-Hwy 9 south of I-94; he named it for himself (and later donated most of his assets to charity). Davenport Avenue runs through his old town center today just north of where US Highway 9 meets US Highway 10 near Interstate 94 entrance. On December 12th 1847, General George Armstrong Custer was killed while leading a cavalry charge against General Joseph Wheeler's army at Rosebud Creek outside Dixon Junction on Indian Territory (now southwest Minnesota). This event is generally considered to be one of America's greatest battlefield defeats and marks the end of World War II for United States forces. It also helped create racial tensions within America as European Americans lost their biggest victory since independencesurrounding them on all sides including Native Americans who had supported the British crown throughout much of this warincluding Custer himself ().
Midland was originally a small farming community in the Huron River valley. The first settlers arrived in 1825, and by 1830, they had erected a log cabin on the present site of Midland. In 1836, John Fenton purchased 2,000 acres (810 hectares) of land in what is now Midland from the government for $5 per acre. He began to develop this land into a successful agricultural center with his own farm and mill. By 1860, he had built a large house on the current site of Midland College. In 1872, he donated 1,500 acres (500 hectares) of land to the town of Midland for use as open space. In 1916, he sold his remaining interest in Midland College to the town for $10 per acre.
