Midland is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 67,541 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous city in the Detroit metropolitan area and one of the largest cities in Michigan. Midland is home to two universities, Wayne State University and Northern Michigan University, as well as numerous businesses and commercial districts including Midland Center, Downtown Midland, and Eastern Market. The name "Midland" has been spelled variously since 1836: Indian Portage (1836), Mount Pleasant (1857), Middleport (1896), Grand Rapids (1901), Lansingburgh (1911), Battle Creek Township (1913). The current form of the name was given to the city by James Kellogg after he bought 640 acres in what is now Midland from a band of Potawatomi Indians in 1836. In 1861, when Michigan became a national territory, Kellogg designated an entire township - Battle Creek Township - as part of his donation to create what would become Midland County. In 1892, another donation from James Kellogg resulted in incorporation of Battle Creek Township into Midland County; this gift also included 8 miles of railroad line running through town center. By 1900, midlanders had begun referring to their town as "The City". In 1911, during World War I efforts were made to rename all American townships after specific countries or battles fought during that conflict- Battle Creek was renamed Germania Heights; but due to objections from local residents it reverted back to its original name just before Armistice Day 1916. During Prohibition years much activity took place withinMidland's limits including bootlegging and speakeasy serving up illicit booze until prohibition ended on January 1st 1933 without any official announcements or signageifying that such activities were no longer allowed inside the city limits despite continued use by some residents who violated liquor laws while still operating inside their homes/businesses under cover of darkness In 1951 local officials decided against renaming anytownship after famous Americans like Genghis Khan or Alexander Hamilton because they felt that such an honor would go too far for a small community like Midlanders which had only recently come into existence . Instead they opted for namesakes honoring historical figures from other parts of Michigan like John Dvorak who served as mayor from 1957-1963 and Ted Weems who was speaker pro tempore for the house from 1963-1967 ..... For many years there have been discussions about changing eitherof these titles however no formal proposal has ever been made

In 1865, Midland became the capital of Michigan Territory and began to grow rapidly into a major city. By 1868, Midland had reached a population of 2,500 people and was becoming one of the largest cities in Michigan. In 1872, Midland became part of the new United States territories formed after the American Civil War and continued to grow in size until 1893 when it reached its current size. In 1907,Midland merged with neighboring villagerawns called "Lansing." The merger resulted in increased business opportunities for both towns and helped create what is now known as Lansing's economic district.
