Midland, Michigan is a small city in the southern Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 1,651 at the 2010 census. Midland is the county seat of Muskegon County and home to Midland State University. The first permanent settler in what is now Midland was John Smeaton in 1813. He founded a farm on the site of current day Midland Township and named it after his native England. By 1821, there were over thirty families living in Midland Township. In 1824, John Denny established the first post office in what is now Muskegon County. The same year saw the opening of first store in what are now Midland and Grand Blanc townships. In 1830, George Stephenson built an electric streetcar line from Detroit to midtown Muskegon Heights and opened the town's first store on Second Street (later renamed Main) opposite today's city hall building. Starting around 1840, steamboats began running between Toledo and Mackinac City on Lake Huron; this led to increased trade through the area and helped spur development along both riverside streets that lined both banks of the Straits of Mackinac across from downtown Muskegon Heights until about 1870 when they became straight avenues with no pause for traffic lights or crossings at bridges like today's I-94/I-96 corridor between Detroit and Flint MI
In 1825, when the Michigan Territory was created, Midland was one of its first settlements. In 1830, James Buchanan became the first U.S. President and designated Midland as the seat of his executive branch in what is now known as Washington Township. The township's name was changed to Benton Township in 1837 after a donation from John Benton. When the Michigan Territory was disbanded in 1848, Benton Township became part of Washtenaw County.
