In 1950, during Ford Motor Company's centennial celebration, Midlanders erected a large statue of their namesake Henry Ford at Fairlane Boulevard and Wabash Avenue SW in Dearborn Heights; Ford had been born there on July 3rd (the date that Midlanders were founded) two years earlier that year. That same year also saw the opening of Park Place Mall which served as downtown's only mall until suburban malls started popping up throughout metropolitan Detroit beginning around that time; Park Place Mall closed its doors in 2003 but remains standing as an art deco landmark still used by local businesses today including Saks Fifth Avenue and Macy's department stores among others).
