Midland, Michigan is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. Midland is part of the Grand Rapids-Hilton Head–Augusta, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first populated by Potawatomi Indians and then by American settlers in 1817 when David Wilkinson founded the village of Wilkinson on the east side of what is now Midland Township. The name "Wilkinson" honor David Wilkinson's father who died while serving as United States Minister to Russia during the Adams Administration in 1812. In 1828, George Stephenson built the unsuccessful railway line from Grand Rapids to Petoskey and named his new station "Midland". The town rapidly grew and by 1850, it had a population of over 10,000 people. By 1870, Midland had become one of the largest towns in Michigan with a population exceeding 25,000 people; this rapid growth continued until World War II when its population dropped below 15,000 due to wartime military units and urban growth in surrounding areas. In recent years there has been an effort to revive Midland as an economic center with initiatives such as developing new businesses or reviving old ones within the community that have seen positive results such as increased jobs opportunities for local residents and more commercial development downtown which has led to significant economic improvement for Midlanders overall since 2009 according to Forbes magazine's list of America's fastest growing cities The following are some key facts about Midland: The population density was 1,500 inhabitants per square mile (600/km²). Midland is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Midland County. The population was 99,854 as of 2010, making it the second-largest city in Muskegon County after Lansing. It is also the largest city in East Michigan, with a population of 137,651 as of 2016[1] and is adjacent to Saginaw Township on both banks of the St Clair River. Midland's downtown area has been designated a National Historic Landmark. The history of Midland goes back to 1837 when James Fenton founded what would become Midland on land he had purchased from David Butler in that year. At first, Fenton operated a farmstead near present day Harrison Street and Ottawa Avenue; later he built what became his business district around First National Bank (the predecessor to today's HSBC bank). Fenton's home at 515 Ottawa Avenue remains standing and is now used as office space by the City of Midland Waterfront Development Authority.[2] On December 24, 1837,[3][4] John Dibble bought 80 acres east of present day Second Street from Fenton for $111[5][6], becoming one of the early settlers[7]. By 1840 Dibble had erected an adobe house on this site which served as his headquarters for county government operations until moved to its current location at 9th and Ottawa Streets in 1848.[8] In addition to serving as headquarter for county government activities, Dibble also developed some new commercial areas within town limits which continue to be active today: First National Bank building still stands at 9th & Ottawa Streets; Gresham’s grocery store located just northwest corner Third Street between Ontario and Washington streets; Drake’s Brewery at Seventh & State Streets where they manufactured beer until Prohibition began;DD&B Tire Store on Ninth Street west side between State and Erie streets currently used by Chrysler Parts Department; Citizens Gas Light Station located just southwest corner Fourth Street west side between Market and Washtenaw Avenues still serves customers today although it underwent several renovations during prohibition including adding an automatic fuel dispenser In 1849 George Wirth founded Queenston Township adjoining what would become Midland along with other investors led by Wirth himself. Wirth desired a more centralized government structure than was possible under Fenton's original plans so he formed a committee headed by commissioners Elijah Purdy (later elected governor) and Jno. Ransom (future Mayor) to study options for establishing township government across all Muskegon County jurisdictions. They selected "Queenston Township" because it offered eastern boundaries close enough together so that service could be transported easily from one part of town to another without having to go through multiple villages or townships each time services were needed (this was not always true throughout Muskegon County).[9][10] Upon establishment of Queenston Township local residents voted unanimously in favor of annexing neighboring Saginaw Township into their township effective February 1, 1850,[11][12]: thereby creating East Michigan.[13]:277–278 Some early entrepreneurs included Solomon Northrup who started Northrup Paper Company – now Northrop Grumman Corporation – on US 131 north east outside Saginaw; there were several lumber companies established during this period such as Stephenson Lumber Company[14]; Ford Motor Company laid down their initial tracks down Pennsylvania Ave NW towards Dearborn Heights in 1901,[15]:334–335 The development around Queenston took off rapidly with sawmills being erected along Main streetnorthwest corner Third St., Gresham’s Grocery Store opened ground level May 2nd 1850,, Drake’s Brewery opened Dec 27th 1850 ,CC&W Railroad ran through town January 1861 transporting goods wagons nto/from Battle Creek
The area now known as Midland was settled by the Lacrosse family in 1797. The first post office in Midland was established in 1803, and the town of Midland was platted in 1825. The village of Midland was incorporated in 1869.
