Midland is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 70,814 at the 2010 census. Midland is the largest city and the county seat of Midland County, Michigan. It is also part of the Flint metropolitan area. The name "Midland" originated from a local Indian word meaning "the place where corn grows." The first known permanent settler in what is now Midland was James Tipton on land grant given to him by George Washington in 1795. Tipton built his home on what is now State Street and named his settlement after himself, Midland Township, Michigan Territory (not to be confused with present-day Midland). By 1824, John Stephenson had platted and named streets in what became MidLAND after himself - this included Main Street which leads into downtown today. In 1867, when Detroit was founded as the provisional capital of America, it claimed all of Michigan's east-central region for its new government including much of what is now Midlanders territory as well as nearby towns like Saginaw and Battle Creek. In an effort to keep control over their own destiny these pioneer citizens voted unanimously to secede from Detroit and form their own municipality called "Midlands", Inc." This independent municipality lasted through until 1895 when it merged with neighboring Ford City under one vote from both cities' leaders--a watershed event that set off a trend of municipal mergers across the Midwest during this time period but did not lead to full independence for either city until decades later when both entities were again united into one entity known as "Midlanders". During World War II many residents decided they would rather stay behind enemy lines than fight in another war; some took up arms while others evacuated Surrounding areas before or during hostilities began so they could avoid combatant gunfire and exposure. Many people who chose not to fight returned home afterwards while others stayed on site helping erect military installations or working noncombatant jobs such as building shelters or cleaning up aftermaths following bombings raids throughout Europe or Japan. During this time, MidLANDs enjoyed some success including hosting several events both large and small such as the Miss America pageant in 1969 and being host to several world championships including ice hockey's inaugural NHL game in 1984. However, during the late 1990s through 2000s there were several waves of decline with many businesses closing their doors due to economic recessionary challenges throughout much of Michigan including Midlanders themselves experiencing increased poverty rates from dramatic job losses throughout that decade or so . The current cityscape is largely based upon redevelopment efforts initiated since then which have helped provide significant improvements to overall quality of life for residents along with support from local government entities typically led by Mayor Rick Warren
