When the first Europeans arrived in what is now Marquette, Michigan, in 1738, they were met with hostility. The area was then a part of the Huron nation and the natives were not welcomed. The French built a trading post near present-day Marquette and started to trade goods with the native people. The first European settler in Marquette was Pierre L’Enfant, who arrived in 1805. He surveyed the area and recommended that it be made into a town. When L’Enfant died in 1816, his son Jean-Baptiste L’Enfant took over his father's work and began to build the cityscape that we see today. L'Enfant also put into place some of Marquette's fundamental policies which have continued to guide the city ever since: one of them was to prohibit nightlife because it damaged property; another was to provide for public education by creating a school system; and still others included limiting business activity within certain limits so as not to disrupt home life or distort economic development. The City of Marquette grew quickly thanks to its location on Lake Superior and its ability to connect directly with other settlements along the way. By 1827, there were over 100 residents living in what is now downtown Marquette. In 1834, Detroit became an independent kingdom under King Louis Philippe I of France after he lost control of Canada following a series of wars with Great Britain. This led to open competition between Detroit businesses and those located within marquette boundaries for access to resources such as raw materials necessary for their manufactories outside Toronto/Canada). In 1862, when Michigan statehood was grantedto America, it passed an act providing for township status within each county; this Act established township form within municipal structures throughout America (except New York City) which gave local governments more say in how their towns functioned while still maintaining some level of autonomy from state authorities (i.e., township form remained through annexation by cities until 1967). In 1834, the first permanent settlers in Marquette were Alexander Mitchell and his wife Catherine. In 1835, John S. Taylor became the first postmaster. The community was named for General George Washington Marquette, who was governor of Michigan at the time. In 1847, a sawmill and gristmill were built in Marquette by Solomon Gaylord and James Wightman. The mills produced lumber until they closed in 1916. In 1862, a school was built on the northeast corner of Third Street and State Road 512. It served as a day-school from 1861 to 1865 before being replaced by the present school building in 1870.
