Marquette, Michigan is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan and is the county seat of Ingham County. The population was 25,853 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous town in Ingham County. The Town of Marquette was chartered on December 1st 1836 by James Dickey and others as a new town in what is now Ingham County. Grant surrounded and burned down the Town Hall while residents were inside for lunch; this event is generally considered to be the start of the war in Marquette. During World War II much activity took place within and around Marquette; many factories were located here including Ford Motorsports (now known as Ford Motor Company), JBL Audio/Video Equipment (later renamed Ingersoll Rand), Western Electric and Alcoa aluminum plants respectively. The area also served as an important manufacturing base for munitions production during both world wars until these industries moved outwards into other parts of Michigan or Wisconsin after 1945 due to decline in demand for military hardware domestically
