Marquette is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, with a population of over 45,000 as of 2010. It is the county seat of Wayne County and was founded on April 24, 1847 by John C. Stevens. The city is named after Captain George Marquette, who explored what are now Michigan and Ohio Country during the 17th century and returned to report that he had found an inland route to China through the Great Lakes region. The first settlers in what is now Marquette were French-Canadian trappers and fur traders who used the area for hunting and fishing before spreading agriculture into what is today northeast Michigan. In 1834, General David Dixon decided to establish a military post in what is today Marquette due to fears that Detroit would become an open season for Native Americans following their defeat at the Battle of Fort Dearborn in 1812. The town was built on land donated by Simon Carondelet and others around this time. The town rapidly grew thanks to its natural resources: kapok trees from Southeast Asia which were grown for dyeing cloth; coal from local mines; timber from areas near Lake Superior; and water from springs fed by glaciers which flow eastward along the Soo River into Lake Superior

Marquette is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Washtenaw County. The population was 21,827 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Michigan. It is located on the north shore of Lake Superior, about northwest of Detroit and southeast of Lansing. The area that would become Marquette was first settled by Miamis in 1777 as part of their war for control over territory along the Upper Peninsula after British forces burned down an Indian village near what is now downtown Marquette. The town was named for John Jacob Astor, who had bought land here in 1801 from Chief Pontiac's band of Ojibwe refugees. The Townsite Act (1824) granted township status to all land within 12 miles (19 km) of present-day Marquette on July 1, 1824. On November 5, 1834, a vote by Township Commissioners authorized incorporation as a city under the name "Marquette." A charter was issued on December 11, 1835 limited to white male residents only but became effective January 1st following passage by both houses of the Michigan State Legislature granting city status to any municipality with a population over 500 souls without providing any funds or assistance to help build infrastructure or support local services such as police and fire departments. On October 15th 1886 when Mackinac Bridge opened between Detroit and Windsor Ontario it was one day before Marquette became one half way up that bridge! In 1896 when passenger service started between Ann Arbor and Mackinac City it made travel through Marquette much easier! In 1940s during World War II many businesses closed in Flint because there were no military jobs available so people moved into town! After the war ended many new businesses opened up including two hospitals which are still open today!
In 1837, the first white settlement in Marquette was made when a group of traders and farmers founded a small community named "Hogan's Ferry" on the west bank of the Grand Traverse River. The site that is now Marquette rests on land owned by the Weis family and was first used as a Indian trading post. In 1839, Daniel Webster led an expedition across the river to Fort Dearborn and erected a trading post at what is today's downtown Marquette. In 1847, Marquette became part of Michigan Territory when it was organized from Indiana. That year, Congress created the Michigan Territorial Legislature to provide for economic development in what would become Michigan. The legislature passed legislation creating three counties: Washtenaw, Oakland, and Wayne; appointing commissioners to manage these new local governments; and establishing schools for children between the ages of 7 and 12 years old. The county seat of Washtenaw County was moved from Chicago to Marquette in 1850. In 1861, Detroit became an independent city and its county seat shifted from Cleveland to Detroit. This event marked perhaps the most dramatic change in local government within Michigan until after World War II when suburbanization began to take hold across much of northern Michigan
