The second school opened in 1840 on what is now Washington Park Avenue just east of downtown Detroitwww.. It operated until 1865 when it burned down due to low enrolment caused by poverty among residents ofDetroit www.. In 1861, JnoFernando de Soto visited this area while exploring the lower half of Michigan www.. In 1847, the Marquette party, led by George H. Smith, crossed the upper Great Lakes and journeyed down the Michigan River to Green Bay. The party was met at the mouth of the river by a band of Ojibwe Indians who welcomed them with Chief Menominee's speech in which he prophesied that they would find rich fur land in this area. The group continued on through what is now Wisconsin and Illinois before reaching what is now Milwaukee County. They were joined by other groups during their trip and soon there were over 100 people travelling together. The group found some good land near Milwaukee but it was not until 1855 when they founded the city of Milwaukee on Lake Michigandale. At first it was called Racine because a French fur trader named Pierre-François Racine had landed there in 1793. In 1835, after Cadillac became president of United States, he ordered Detroit to be renamed Marquette after him as an honor for his help in developing that city.
