On October 12, 1864, President Abraham Lincoln signed legislation creating Wayne County and giving it its present boundaries; this act also designated Marquette as its county seat. The early residents were primarily farmers and miners who came to Marquette from various parts of Michigan and Ohio via railroads or boats during the late 1800s and early 1900s; many of these people still live there today. Some notable people from marquette include: lumber magnate Jens Nyborg (1871-1957), basketball coach Rick Majerus (1962-2002), Ford Motor Company president Jimmy Carter (1981-2008), NHL player Gordie Howe (1946-2013) and several former mayors including Jack Kemp (1982-1994) and Byron Whitehurst (2001-2007).
