During World War II, marquette played an important role as one of three embarkation ports for troops coming into The United States through Canada; it also hosted large numbers of military test pilots during their training flights over central Michigan during that war period. A new shopping center opened in downtown Marquette in 2007 after years effort by local developers Jeffery Ladd and his wife Lisa Schwartz;[1] construction began soon after with plans to have all aspects including architecture designed by renowned Chicago-based architect Daniel Libeskind.[2][3][4] The project was completed just before Libeskind's death from leukemia at age 60 on July 21st 2009

In 1847, the Marquette Railroad was built from Toledo, Ohio to the town of Marquette. The railroad was originally called the "Great Western Railroad" and it connected with other railroads in Michigan. The Marquette Railway operated until 1971.
