The Marquette community was founded in 1847 by the descendants of John J. Marquette and his wife, Martha Whetstone. The town was named for Marquette's father, Pierre-Mathieu Marquette, who had purchased a tract of land in 1836. The first settler in what is now Marquette was John Morse, who arrived in 1847. In 1850, four men - George Stephenson, Isaac Noyes, Israel Putnam and Augustus Bogue - were the first to build a sawmill on the east side of the river. By 1860, there were 10 businesses in the town and it had a population of 100. In 1865, lumber mills began to be built along the river and by 1870, there were 11 mills operating in Marquette. The economy of marquette changed during World War I because production at the mills increased while demand for munitions decreased; however, during World War II output increased again because of military production.
