Madison Heights is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 10,748 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Mecosta–Kalamazoo Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located on the southern edge of Kalamazoo County. The first settler in what is now Madison Heights was William McKinney, who arrived in 1814. The town was named for James Kieft, 1st Viscount Kilmainhampton, who had been killed during the War of 1812. In 1837, John A. Brown founded a sawmill on the east side of the street that now forms Main Street in Madison Heights. The mill closed in 1865 but reopened as an agricultural implement store in 1890 known as Brown's Implement Store and later became an ice cream parlor and candy store called Candy Palace until it closed its doors in 1984. In 1862, John Ladd purchased 640 acres (2 km²) southeast of present-day Madison Heights from Jesse Mapes and donated it to establish what would become Lansing Township adjacent to his farmstead on land that he had also acquired south of modern-day Cadillac Boulevard (now I-94). Lansing Township was organized on November 3, 1860, via petition by residents J[ohn] B[enjamin] H[einrich]. On October 16, 1863 – seven days after Michigan's entry into Union – Ladd erected a granite plaque at his home bearing this inscription: "Hereon lies buried one hundred and fifty men who died in defense of our country when its cause required such sacrifice." The original building still stands within Lansing Township limits today as Ladd Hall Museum; it served as headquarters for the first incarnate territorial government for Oakland County before becoming Hammondsville Town Hall circa 1915 when that township lost its status within Lansing Township following prohibition laws enacted by Governor George W.[iller] On January 15, 1868 – just two weeks after Michigan's admission into Federation – William McKinney published an advertisement for sale of 320 acres (12 km²) borderingpresent-day Toledo—a site then being considered for a new city called Detroit—in which he offered to donate 100 acres (40 km²) eastward along Woodward Avenue to each newly admitted state if Detroit were established instead. On February 9th same year Alexander Lawriecash submitted to Michigan’s Territorial Legislature a bill entitled “An Act To Encourage settlement near or adjoining Lakes Huron & Saginaw” providing 5% cash value towards purchase price if plat could not be sold within six months; failure to receive plat prior to expiration resulted forfeiture of sale proceeds minus $5 per acre over five years with no possibility for redemption or refunding any money received beyondhang time without payment either up front or interest at 4%. By 1860, the population had reached 1,500 people and by 1870, it hadgrown to 3,500 residents. In 1881, the village became a incorporated municipality with a population of 6,000 people and by 1900, it had grown to 11,000 people. In 1932, Madison Heights merged with neighboring Parkview Township to form one large township with a population of 25,000 people.
