On July 1, 1892, Willis H. Kapp and his partner George Fenton opened the first optical store in Madison Heights. The store was partitioned into two floors with a single window on the upper floor that allowed customers to view the products on display. Over time, other businesses followed suit and by 1913, there were nine optical stores in town. The early Optical Merchants of America (OMA) members decided to establish a trade show specifically for glass optics at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. At this show, representatives from many different companies exhibited their latest products in glass and metalware. Because of this show and its impact on the industry, OMA choseMadison Heights as its permanent headquarters in 1896. One of the most important milestones in Optical Store history is when Willis H Kapp became President of OMA in 1912. This event marks an important change for the industry because it marked a shift from manufacturing to selling products through marketing channels instead of just selling products themselves. In addition, Kapp helped create what is now known as direct-to-consumer sales model which helped increase sales by reducing middlemen involved in typical distribution chains

In 1937, Japan began World War II by invading China and requisitioning large blocks of optical equipment from American companies. This led to great losses for American Optical Industries (AOI) as well as Germany's Rheinmetall-Krupp company. During World War II, AOI produced over one million pieces of optical equipment including telescopes, binoculars, spotting scopes, cameras, radios...the list goes on! After the war ended in 1945, AOI resumed its production capabilities but still suffered greatly from the post-war recession. This situation changed when President Truman authorized AOI to enter into a business partnership with Raytheon Corporation in 1951. With this new relationship in place AOI experienced rapid growth throughout the early 21st century; however recent economic conditions have caused some declines in sales at both company headquarters in Bethesda MD and product lines worldwide. However, despite these setbacks AOI has continued its drive towards innovation through software development partnerships with other companies such as Leica Camera AG (Leica), Pentax Kamera USA Inc., Sigma Company Ltd., Sony Corporation etcetera. Today there is no doubt that photography is a highly visual art form - whether capturing natural scenes or creating artistic compositions - so any decline in sales is likely only temporary until new technological advances allow for even higher quality prints without sacrificing ease-of-use or costliness

Madison Heights is a community in Macomb County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Madison Heights was John Stevens who arrived in 1837. He and his family were the first white settlers in what would become Macomb County. In 1847, two brothers named William and George Washington Smith founded the village of Clinton on what is now State Road 528 east of downtown Detroit. In 1856, James Kmiec settled a small farm on the southeast corner of present-day Madison and Clair Streets in what would become Madison Heights. Kmiec had come to Mackinac Island from Waterford Township in Ontario County, Michigan during the 1850s to take up land offered for purchase by General David A. Robison along with other Revolutionary War veterans and their families after America's victory over Great Britain at Yorktown naval battle on October 17,1851. Kmiec began developing his farm into aageable land that he could sell or lease to others for agricultural production or development as a town center node for early macomb county residents seeking access to markets outside of Detroit; potential investors included Andrew Gregg (a banker), Levi Coffin (a railroad builder), Elisha Holmes (the founder of Dearbornshaquetaqua Hospital), Isaac Nourse (founder of Washtenaw Furniture Company) and others including Simon Cameron who would later be instrumental in creating Macomb County's first township.,later renamed Rogers Township
The first white people to live in the area now known as Madison Heights were John and Anna White. They settled on a farm near the current site of East Side High School in 1837. The Whites were the first farmers in what is now Madison Heights, and their land became a popular spot for farmers because it was well- cultivated and nearby water supplies made it conducive to agriculture. The Whites also developed a successful paper business, which continued until 1916. In 1881, they moved to their present home on Wacker Drive, which they had built themselves from scratch. The Whites enjoyed a long life and died in 1978 at age 100.
