Madison Heights is a census-designated place (CDP) in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. The area now made up of Madison Heights was part of Lansing Township before it was organized as Wayne County. The first white person to live in what is now Madison Heights was Captain John Smith who settled there in 1795. In 1812, the village of Smithtown was established on the east side of the river near today's home of University Park. It lay within present-day Lansing Township and its post office operated from 1812 until 1839. In 1828, Territorial Governor Alfred Beekman created a new township for Cass County and named it for James Ketchum, one of his aides during the brief governorship. Mrs. Ketchum donated land to make into a town site on which she built her home called "Ketchum Place." The first settler in what became Madison Heights was Isaac Ryan who arrived there in 1830 from Holland Township, New York via steamboat. He erected a cabin on what is now North Fourth Street and named it "Ryan's Grove." He had two children by his wife Sarah and they lived with him while he built his house; their son George also resided there some time later when he married Sarah’s niece Emma Hutton (1814-92). In 1840, Ryan sold his property to Abram Prentice for $1,000 cash and moved back to Holland Township where he died about 1865 after many years farming located just west of current day Grand Rapids Boulevard between Third and Fourth Streets NW. 4th Ward Alderman Fenton bought Ryan's Grove from Abram Prentice for $2,500 in 1865; however it passed through several hands until it came into public ownership by Wm M Mason in 1886 which then added Second Ward Alderman Abraham Janssen as trustee; finally by 1912 it passed through 4th Ward Alderman John Jolson to become part of Madison Heights Community District #1 What are now First Avenue NE & Washington Street NW were undeveloped areas until they were annexed by downtown Grand Rapids in 1924 when Ford Motor Company began manufacturing downriver at its Rouge plant north of I-75/I-94 junction Although muchampoo has changed over time due largely to suburbanization east Stroudsburg has experienced more recent growth that can be seen mainly along Saginaw Street immediately south of I-94 exit
