The earliest known inhabitants were Lenape Indians who built a small hunting camp on Mackinac Island about 1604-05 A.D., before moving northward to what is now Park Rapids and other locations in present-day Michigan. The first white residents in Madison Heights were John Skelton and his family who arrived around 1800 C&O Railroad trackage was laid through this area; they cleared land, erected homes, raised crops, hunted game & fished until 1834 when they sold their interest in Mackinac Island to Jno Hossack for $1 per acre/acre In 1871 David Davenport bought land east of present-day Madison Heights from Jno Hossack for $5 per acre/acre; he founded Davenport Manufacturing Company where bicycles still are made today In 1906 Alfred Prentice bought 8 acres southeast of current day Madison Heights from Davenport for $10 per acre In 1916 Prentice became owner & manager / president & treasurer / director - after which time it continued under his name until 1984 When it merged with Detroit Bicycle company forming "Detroit Bicycle Corporation" In 1984 it ceased operations

Madison Heights is home to two high schools - Jefferson High School and Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic High School - as well as six elementary schools and one middle school. The Towne Lake Marina provides fishing, boating, swimming, and jet skiing opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

In 1830, the town was renamed to Lansing after George Lansing, the first Territorial Governor. The population of Lansing reached 10,000 by 1840 and peaked at 25,000 in 1850. However, the city's prosperity slowed down during the mid-19th century due to economic depression and immigration from Eastern Europe. In 1871, Lansing was merged with Dearborn into the newly created Michigan City District.
