They named their village after General James Ewing – one of three officers who accompanied Captain John Fenton aboard his survey party that discovered this location on July 15, 1824 while attempting to find a route through difficult territory lying between Lake Superior and Detroit Bayou (now Lower Peninsula). In 1840s local resident Nicholas Wecker built what is now known as Wecker’s grocery store on Broadway—the first business in town after it was platted adjacent to what would become downtownlivonia in 1835 by Pierre Elliott Trudeau Sr., one half owner with fellow Canadian immigrant Nathan Lyon (the future Prime Minister) and William Chambers (founder/manager/president pro Tem de la Chambre des Enchères du Québec).
