Livonia, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Livonia Township. The population was 1,751 at the 2010 census. It is located on the western border of Macomb County and east of Oakland County. Livonia has been inhabited since at least 8500 BC when Paleo-Indians traded with the Hurons. In 1837, John Butterfield discovered gold in what is now Livonia and named it after his home town, Boston, Massachusetts. The town was established in 1839 by settlers from New York City who were seeking to establish trade routes between those two regions. butterfield's discovery led to increased activity in the area around Livonia, which began to attract settlers wealthy enough to afford land and build homes. The first post office was established in 1840; it remained open until 1959. The name "Livonia" was given by General David Dixon as an honor for his victory over Native Americans at Battle of Coldwater Creek during the Northwest Indian War (1849-1851). According to one source, Dixon had observed that many natives were living near Detroit without having any place to protective themselves from local Indians who would kill them if they ventured too close: "I thought it would be nice to give them a place where they could rest easy while they awaited their vindication." In 1850, Reverend James Worthy founded what is now known as Holy Cross Catholic School District #1 which included Livonia along with other townships including Orion and Hollandale on Dearborn River north of Lansingburgh Lake about 12 miles (19 km) east of Detroit

Livonia is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and it is the county seat of Livonia County. The population was 71,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Windsor metropolitan area. Livonia was founded on November 3, 1837, by fur traders George Stephenson and David Dixon as a small settlement on Grand River east of what is now Detroit. In 1838, the community was renamed after lieutenant colonel John Livonian, who served in the army during the Mexican-American War and helped lead American forces to victory over Mexico at Monterrey. The first post office in Livonia opened in 1840. The town grew rapidly due to its location near two major transportation routes—the Grand River and Michigan Central Railway (MCR) Tracks running through central Michigan—and its access to timberlands for lumbering and farming. In 1848, Livonia became a village when it annexed nearby Battle Creek Township; Battle Creek had been established as a township on December 12, 1847 by act of Congress prior to becoming an organized municipality. On January 29th 1861, following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation which ended slavery in America,[3] all slaves in America must be free or face martial law.[4] As a result of this proclamation all Native Americans living within 10 miles (16 km) of any white person were ordered to leave their homes or be killed[5]; however there were no similar orders given to non-native Americans living within that radius[6]. As a result of this orderlivonia passed legislation forbidding any slave owners from transporting their slaves across state lines without written permission from both their mastershavers and authorities; this ordinance remained in effect until 1865 when President Abraham Lincoln issued an Executive Order allowing such transportation without compensation[7]. On July 8th 1861,[8] pro-democratic candidate Abraham Lincoln ran for president against incumbent James Buchanan; Lincoln won 62% of the popular vote against Buchanan's 38%. As commander-in-chief Lincoln took executive action ordering all military commanders throughout America to disburse $1 million dollars towards Freedmen's Bureau projects[9], intending to provide housing and education for these new citizens[10]. However because many soldiers had never seen freedom before they found it difficult not only live among these newly freed people but also fund these initiatives themselves,[11][12]. Because so much money had been raised by those working towards emancipation – primarily women – there was great unrest amongst some soldiers upon learning about this financial assistance being offered unto former slaves[13][14]: some called it " Grants TO THE SLAVERY" while others termed it "AN END TO THE RACIAL CRISIS".[15][16] After viewing pictures taken during his inauguration campaign he decided not give further financial assistance until after his inauguration.[17][18] As events unfolded leading up to America's Civil War some officials began calling for increased security measures around Livonia; fear existed that Confederate troops might attempt an attack if large numbers black Americans resided within its borders.[19][20] Beginning on September 11th 1863 General William Tilton rode his horse into town unannounced asking residents whether they knew anything about rebels marching through their town en route back from battlefronts outside Detroit; most residents believed he wanted information about possible rebel activities inside their city limits[21][22]; however later reports revealed that General Tilton actually needed help finding survivors from an early morning raid conducted by Confederate cavalry known as Operation Gulliver"[23],[24],[25]).
