The University of Michigan campus occupies a portion of the city's north side which leads to a busy shopping district bordered by Northfield Road and Highland Park Avenue east to I-75/US-27 south to Woodward Avenue west to US-12 . Downtown contains several large retailers such as Sears Holdings Corporation, Macy's Department Store, JCPenney,[8] Kmart,[9], Home Depot[10], Verizon Wireless,[11]and HEB Wholesale Foods Inc.. Livonia was founded in 1837 by John Stephenson and his family. The town was named in honor of General George Washington Livonia, the first governor of Michigan Territory. The town was originally a frontier community located on the southern end of what is now Livonia Township. It grew rapidly during the early years of the American Revolution, and by 1792 had a population of about 60 people. In 1837, Stephenson purchased land at the mouth of the Detroit River from speculator Nicholas Jacobs for $5,000. He began to build a small community on what would become Livonia Township, which he named after himself and his wife Lucy. By 1840, there were 100 residents living in Livonia. In 1881, Stephenson died and bequeathed his property to township trustees for development into an educational village with a library, schoolhouse, cemetery, parkland and other public amenities. By 1925, when it became part of Metro Detroit Area (MDA), Livonia had grown to over 1,000 people and its schools were modernized with air conditioning and new sports fields.
