McKay built two large mills at present day downtown Livonia – one known as McKay’s Mill andthe other as McKee’s Mill – which produced cotton textiles until 1865 when they were replaced by three modern steel mills operated by GEICO Corporation starting in 1919/1920: American Steel & Wire Company (later ArcelorMittal), Hastings Tube Works (now Alcoa) and Metropolitan Machine Tools Company (later Makita). All three companies still have their factories active today; American Steel & Wire Company operates its plant at 5555 N Shiawassee Road in Dearborn Heights while GEICO Corporation's main plant remains operational at 800 Hudson Avenue in downtown Detroit; Hastings Tube Works closed its doors effective May 1st 2017 following sixty years of operations; Metropolitan Machine Tools Company ceased operations on January 1st 2019 after more than fifty years of continuous production at 12755 Woodward Avenue North Suite 201 in Cleveland Heights; all six plants operated together as METROMATICS Corporation until 1984 when each company split into its own products divisions; ArcelorMittal spun off its aluminum product division into aluminum Dynamics Incorporated on November 15th 2009 leaving METROACTIVE plc., parent company of ArcelorMittal Holdings Limited., with complete control over all metalworking businesses worldwide
Livonia is a city in Midwestern United States, located on the Detroit River. The population was 23,871 at the 2010 census. Livonia was founded in 1834 as a small community on the east side of the river, and grew rapidly during the 19th century because of its position as an important transportation hub for goods moving through Michigan and Ohio. In 1871, Livonia became one of four cities in Michigan annexed by Cleveland, and experienced rapid growth following World War II as businesses moved to the city from other parts of Michigan. However, economic problems led to significant decline during the 1990s and 2000s and Livonia has since struggled to maintain its identity as a major cultural center.
