By 1828, Livonia had become an agricultural center with over 100 homes and businesses producing cash crops such as soybeans, corn, wheat, rice and cotton; flour for baking breads, pastry goods and other pies; cheese; eggs; soap produced from lanolin (a type of wool) extracted from animals; bricks for buildings; lumber for furniture and other objects In 1837-38 Major John Sibley surveyed part of what became today's downtown area while exploring new areas for settlement northward along what would become I-94 corridor when he discovered lead mines northwest (later known as Saginaw Valley) near modern day Livonia on February 16th 1840 while traveling through that region on his surveyors road trip across sections then still covered in snow drifts caused by blizzard conditions located about 8 miles due southwest milepost 6 east longitude about 54 degrees latitude about -7 degrees west longitude He named this place Saginaw Valley after General John Stark's famous victory at Fallen Timbers against General St Clair near present day Detroit Lakes just south of where Mackinac Bridge crosses Lake Huron

Livonia was founded in 1853 by General George Washington Custer and his regiment of cavalry. The town was named for Michigan's first U.S. Senator, John Livonia (1784-1864). In 1871, the town became a city when it joined the Michigan Territory. After becoming a state in 1912, Livonia grew rapidly as an agricultural center and developed into one of the most important cities in the state. Livonia is now a regional economic center with many businesses located within its boundaries.
