Livonia, Michigan is home to the oldest continuously operating gun sling in the United States. The Livonia Gun Slings Company was founded in 1892 by George W. Brown and his brother-in-law, Prescott W. Doerffer. The company manufactured and distributed gun slings for shotguns, rifles and pistols. The first gun sling was made out of webbing and a piece of cloth or leather. Gun slings were used to hold firearms against the side of a person's head in order to aim them while shooting from a position above ground. Larger guns could also be draped over someone's shoulder while they shot with their hands free at close range.Gun slings were often decorated with flower petals, feathers ornaments, ornaments from animal horns or tusks, and bells as part of the presentation process for gift giving occasions. In 1910, the Livonia Gun Slings Company merged with another company named Lake Placid Arms Manufacturing Company to form the Livonia Firearms Manufacturing Corporation (later renamed Smith & Wesson). The Smith & Wesson company continued to producegun slings until 1976 when it merged into Colt Incorporated .

There were at least three different types of gun slings at that time, but the most common type was the Weaver’s knot sling. It consisted of a piece of cloth or leather with a large loop at one end, which could be used to secure an object around the waist or neck.
Livonia is a city in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 17,814 at the 2010 census. Livonia is part of the Grand Rapids–based MSA. The area now encompassed by Livonia was first settled by Native Americans in what is now Eaton County and when that region became part of Michigan in 1835, it also included present-day Livonia Township. The first white settler in what would become Livonia Township was John Richardson, who arrived there from New York on July 24, 1834. In 1837, Richardson built what is now the Richardson House as his home and later served as mayor of Lansing before becoming a U.S. Senator from Michigan from 1840 to 1848 and again from 1850 to1856. In 1830, George Washington Carpenter moved to Flint with his family and began farming land he had purchased west of Toronto Road (now Gratiot Avenue) just north of where Livonia now stands. He built the Carpenter House on this property in 1831 and it remains standing today as one of the most recognizable landmarks in Livonia Township. Other early settlers include James Waddell (1833-1901), Daniel Haggerty (1836-1910), Abram Purdy (1839-1920), John Norris (1841-1924), Isaac Whiteley (1843-1900), William Fenton (baptized William Flournoy; 1830 miles west of Detroit; died 1889) and Levi Coffin (baptized Levi Coffin; born November 8th, 1827; died October 3rd, 1893). The town charter for Livonia was granted on February 14th, 1858 by Governor John Cazorla under whose jurisdiction it then lay within the newly created Mackinaw County. During its early years many local businesses were operated out of homes or attached buildings such as Mr Hyde's grocery store which still stands today on Gratiot Avenue near Cass Ave., Mrs Hyde's sewing shop located at 615 Ford Rd., Drury's druggist at 449 Ford Rd., Post Office at 711 N State St., Methodist Episcopal Church at 330 Saginaw St., Baptist Church at 505 E State St., Masonic Lodge No 2 located at 601 Wabash Ave., Old stone jail/administration building located east sideof Main Street between Gratiot Avenue & Ninth Street which still exists today as an apartment complex called "Livonia Heights". During World War I approximately 100 men were employed by General Motors plant #1 in River Rouge to produce munitions for US Army troops fighting overseas while over 500 women workers took advantage of GMC plants throughout America to produce food for soldiers during that time frame including production facilities located in Bridgeport Conn.; Hamden Ct.; Warren Pa.; Youngstown Ohio; Scranton Pa.; Dayton Ohio; Fort Wayne Ind.; Duluth Minn.; Winnipeg Manitoba Canada). Livonia is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the seat of Livonia Township. The population was 43,812 at the 2010 census, making it the fifteenth-most populous city in Michigan. Livonia is part of the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. Livonia's history dates back to 1824 when David Dickey founded a small settlement on land that he had acquired from George Washington as part of his purchase of lands in what is now Wayne County, Michigan from Native Americans. In 1828, Dickey donated 4 wards of land to create Livonia Township which included all or parts of: Dearborn Heights (later East Dearborn), Highland Park, Mount Pleasant, Oakwood-Mt. Pleasant Manor and Park Hill Village. In 1835, John Silliman erected a sawmill on the east side of present day Main Street in what is now downtown Livonia to supply lumber for construction projects around Detroit and other cities during the 1830s and 1840s by combining logs from several different mills into one product. By 1850, there were seventeen sawmills in Livonia; eight operated by men and seven by women who cut lumber for shipment to other towns across Michigan., Two years later Pemberton & Sons built their first locomotive shop on Third Avenue south of Main Street (). The company constructed fourteen locomotives between1850 and 1860 at their factory before selling them off piecemeal or giving them away to various railroad companies throughout north America including one trip to Chicago (). In 1865 Pemberton & Sons merged with brothers Isaac Vail and James Pemberton Sr., creating Vail Brothers Steel Works (); this company manufactured rails until 1978 when it was sold to Nipponsteel Corporation (); however steel production continued at Vail Brothers Steel Works until 1992 when it closed down completely.. This period marked an important change for Livonia as steel production moved from outside town towards within town where people worked together in close quarters sharing resources like water power,. In 1814, the People's Republic of China was founded in Livonia, and the town quickly became one of its most important commercial centers. In 1916, Livonia became a city and has since continued to grow in population.
