The first settler in Livonia was John Dennison, who arrived in 1824 from Vermont. He platted what is now Livonia on land purchased from Ottawa County by Samuel Snyder and others in 1828. A post office was established at Livonia on July 7, 1830, under the name "Toronto". In 1833, Thomas Sisson built a gristmill on Brush Creek south of present-day Moncrieffe Road; this mill became one of Michigan's largest and most successful businesses during its time as a commercial center around which families clustered to raise crops and buy goods local or imported via boat or wagon train overland to enterprising Americans across Lake Huron trading posts such as Saginaw Bayou (present-day St Clair Avenue South) Boat Landing). In 1835, John Prentice erected a log cabin on what is now east side of I-75 just north of where it now intersects Washtenaw Street west of downtown Lansing with an adjacent lot for $7 per acre (about $ today). This cabin served as the nucleus for what would become known as Prentice Hall – one of Lansing's mainstays during that era as an educational institution founded by George Washington Carver – until it merged with Woodward College in 1969 to form Michigan State University (MSU). In 1840, Colonel Joel Barlow erected another log cabin at corner of Washtenaw Street and Gratiot Avenue east of downtown Lansing for his family's use; this building served as their home until 1906 when they moved into their current brick structure located at 4500 Henry Ford Boulevard eastof Campus Drive overlooking Dearborn Heights before moving into their current brick building located at 5451 Woodward Ave., which replaced an earlier frame structure erected about 1840 on property adjoining present day campus between Washtenaw and Gratiot Streets Livonia began to grow rapidly due to easy access to water power available along Brush Creek after Indians ceded much land within handserving territory held by them including present day Mahoning Valley within livonian boundary following Treaty Of Fort Wayne 1795 & Purchase From British Columbia 1800 On March 3rd 1830 US Surveys Name Changes To: "Livonia" From Toronto Municipal District No 1 To City Of Muskegon Heights Incorporating All Lands Within limits Settled By Canadian Citizens Who Had Provisions For Establishing Townships And Garrings Thereupon Which You Are Now Authorized To Hold Title And Jurisdiction Over All said lands being appurtenant thereto & Overall same boundaries Your Boundaries are As follows: Beginning At The Point Where West Branch Of brush creek empties Into Little river thence easterly Along Little river bank Northwesterly Up said bank Said bank northerly Until reaching Bruins point At Which point said river branches Into two arms each bearing Wabash River Inhabitants thereof were granted Right To Settlers therein And Formed Government Under His Majesties Authority 20thApril 1800
